Football Rolls Past McDaniel 49-6 on Homecoming Saturday

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus football team earned a dominant 49-6 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference play on Homecoming Saturday at Patterson Field.

With the win, the Bears improved to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Green Terror fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Junior running back Tony Holden stole the show with 154 yards off 20 carries and matched his career-high with three touchdowns. Holden averaged a whopping 7.7 yards per carry and was given the Kenneth E. Walker trophy postgame, the most outstanding Ursinus player from the annual homecoming contest.

Junior quarterback Jalen Bradford went 13-of-28 for 201 yards through the air with a pair of touchdown passes. Bradford also added 24 rushing yards on 10 carries. First-year Ryder Zulkowski led the Bears with 72 receiving yards off two catches behind catching a 60-yard touchdown pass.

The Green Terror muffed the opening kickoff and sophomore Matthew Charney recovered the ball for the Bears at the McDaniel six yard line in a stunning turn of events to begin the game. Holden needed just one carry to score and put the Bear up 7-0 just eight seconds into the contest. However, the Green Terror put together a good-looking nine-play 75-yard drive in response and scored a touchdown to make it 7-6 after a blocked extra point. Ursinus drove back into McDaniel territory on their ensuing drive, but a missed 32-yard field goal ended the threat. The Bears forced a three-and-out before converting on their next drive into McDaniel territory when senior fullback Dawson Fresses punched it in from a yard out to make it 14-6 with 37 seconds left in the first quarter.

McDaniel put together another strong drive that made it as far as to the Bears four-yard line but missed a field goal wide right to keep the score at 14-6 in the early stages of the second quarter. Ursinus went back to the ground on its next series and powered its way to a 21-6 which ended with a five-yard touchdown reception from senior Billy Cook on 3rd-and-Goal. Bradford then hit Zulkowski in stride for a 60-yard touchdown on the Bears next drive to make it 28-6, which they carried into halftime.

A 64-yard kickoff return from sophomore Cody House gave the Bears good field position to start the second half and two runs from Holden ended with Ursinus up 35-6 just a minute and a half into the third quarter. The Ursinus defense continued to dominate the Green Terror offense throughout the second half and was highlighted by a brilliant one-handed interception by junior Anthony Esposito with 8:11 left in the third quarter. Holden added his final touchdown of the day with 1:47 left in the third quarter off an 18-yard scamper to make it a 42-6 game. Ursinus added one last touchdown in the fourth quarter when sophomore running back Andrew Kmett scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 16-yard run that made the score 49-6.

Senior linebacker Brett Gross led the Bears with a game-high nine tackles (six solo) and one interception. Junior defensive end Connor Carter posted eight tackles (four solo), 2.5 TFL, and a career-high two sacks while senior defensive end Ryan Bodolus added seven tackles (three solo). Junior defensive back Joseph Small snatched his first collegiate interception in the contest in his first career start.

Trent Gaskins scored the lone Green Terror touchdown in the game and finished the day with 56 yards on 12 carries.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, November 4th as they will travel to face Gettysburg at 1:00 p.m.
