Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No.25 Field Hockey Powers Past Dickinson, 5-1.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind three fourth quarter goals, the No. 25 Ursinus College Field Hockey earned a 5-1 Centennial Conference victory over Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon from Snell Field.

With the victory Ursinus moves to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fall to 7-8 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. The victory also snaps a four-game skid against the Red Devils, marking as the first victory over Dickinson since September of 2018.

First-year Kirsten Johnson scored her first collegiate goal, while junior Mary Lauren Franz tallied two goals tying for the team-high and season total to eight. First-year Marie Brainard scored the Bears final goal in the fourth quarter, marking the third consecutive game in which she has recorded a goal.

The Bears offense opened the contest with the first penalty corner taking place just thirty seconds into the first quarter. Junior defender Maeve Montgomery tallied the first shot, but it landed wide of the goal to keep the game scoreless. After the Bears had two shots saved during the third minute, Ursinus capitalized on their next opportunity when Johnson connected on a loose ball to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead. Dickinson quickly responded at the 5:22-mark as Megan McClure found Abby Marthins on a one-timer shot to tie the contest at one apiece. The Bears offense continued the offensive pressure firing three more shots in the quarter, but the game remained tied at the first stanza. During the second period, Franz tallied the lone goal as she created some space in front of the net and fired a backhanded shot past the Red Devils defense and into the cage to give Ursinus a one goal advantage. With under five minutes remaining in the half, Franz recorded a shot on goal that was saved by the Red Devils netminder to keep the Bears ahead 2-1 at halftime.

The Bears opened the third quarter with the first scoring opportunity as Brainard tallied a shot on goal, but her scoring opportunity was saved by Dickinson's Lucy Walrond. Brainard and senior forward Ellie Bruggeman each collected shots in the period, but the score remained knotted at 2-1 heading into the fourth quarter. Just two minutes into the final stanza, Ursinus quickly added to their advantage when Franz earned her second goal of the game at the 47:45-mark. Brainard started the opportunity firing a shot on goal that deflected to Franz who tucked the rebound into the back of the cage to give Ursinus the 3-1 lead. The offense continued to control the pace of the game firing three more shots on goal throughout the next three minutes with each opportunity being saved by Dickinson's Taylor Schlein. During a penalty corner at the 50:54-mark, Johnson fired a shot from inside the circle and junior Amanda Groeling deflected the shot past the Red Devils defense to increase the Bears lead to three. The final Ursinus goal came at the 56:09-mark, as Brainard dribbled into the circle and fired a high shot past the Red Devils netminder and into the back of the cage. The final tally marks as the most goals in a game for Ursinus since scoring six against Albright College on September 16th.
