HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus Volleyball team let a 2-0 set lead slip away as they dropped a five-setter on the road to Haverford (25-17, 26-24, 15-25, 13-15) on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action.
Junior
Caroline Sherman registered a career-high 27 kills behind a .274 hitting percentage and completed a kill-dig double-double with 12 digs. Sophomore
Mel Eglinton posted 12 kills on a .297 hitting percentage and tallied 16 digs while senior
Haley Spotts added 11 kills on a .455 hitting percentage. Junior
Emma Illovsky led the team with 22 digs and classmate
Rachel Bernard paced the offense with 32 assists. Sophomore
Erin Dychdala recorded a career-high 24 assists as well.
The teams traded points back and forth to start in the first set until the Bears surged ahead by winning 11 of the next 14 points after trailing 5-4 to go up 15-8. Ursinus extended its lead to 19-10 but the Fords rallied to cut the lead down to 19-14 behind four-straight point wins. The Bears responded to win the first set after taking six of the last nine points.
Haverford started strong in the second set as they went up 6-1, but the Bears stormed back by winning 10 of the next 13 points to go up 11-9. The Fords tied up the set at 12 before Ursinus won three of the next four points to go up 16-13. The Bears countered a short Fords run by winning five of the next seven points to go up 21-17 after leading by one at 16-15. Ursinus worked their way up to 23-20 until the Fords won three-straight points to tie the set at 23. The Bears won two of the next three points to put themselves at set point at 25-24 and used a Haverford attack error to lock up the set.
Ursinus took an early 5-3 advantage in the third set before the Fords won five of the next seven points to go up 8-7. The next few points went back and forth which left the Bears down one at 11-10, but that would be as close as they would get in the set. The Fords won eight of the next 10 points to go up 19-12 and five of the last six points to pull away for the third set win.
After another competitive start to the next set, the Bears won four of the next five points with the score tied at four to take an 8-5 lead. Haverford countered by winning seven of the next nine points to go up 12-10, but the Bears responded with six of the of the next nine points to go up 16-13. The set of runs continued with the Fords taking five of the next six points to go up 18-17 and Ursinus battled back to take the lead back at 20-19. Haverford won four of the next five points to go up 23-21 until Ursinus won four-straight points to put themselves at match point with a 24-23 lead. However, out of a timeout, the tide of the match turned when the Fords won four of the next five points to force the fifth set with a 27-25 set win.
Neither team held no more than a two-point lead in an extremely back and forth fifth set. There were seven ties and eight lead changes throughout. Trailing 9-7, the Bears won five of the next seven points to take a 12-11 lead and force a Haverford timeout. The Fords responded out of the timeout by taking the four of the final five points.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 28th as they will host Dickinson at 12:00 p.m.
