COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus volleyball team suffered a five set loss to Dickinson (25-22, 21-25, 31-29, 22-25, 11-5) in Centennial Conference action on homecoming Saturday at Helfferich Hall.
Sophomore
Mel Eglinton posted a team-high 13 kills while completing a kill-dig double-double with 16 digs for the Bears. Junior
Caroline Sherman added a kill-dig double-double as well with 12 kills and 14 digs while junior
Emma Illovsky paced the Bears with a team-high 24 digs. Junior
Rachel Bernard led the Bears with a team-high 29 assists in addition to 10 digs and sophomore
Erin Dychdala posted 14 plus seven digs.
Ursinus opened the first set strong by going up 4-1 before eventually extending its lead to 9-5. Dickinson won four straight points to tie the set at nine before taking their first lead of the match at 13-11. Ursinus responded by taking six of the next seven points to go up 17-14 only to be answered by Dickinson with five straight points that put them up 19-17. The Bears punched back with the decisive run of the set by taking seven of the next nine points to go up 24-21 and Eglinton locked up the first set win with a kill.
The Bears won four straight points after Dickison took the first two points to go up 4-2 in the second set. Dickinson rallied to pull ahead at 7-6 until Ursinus won three of the next four points to go up 10-8. Following some back and forth action left the Bears up 13-12, the Red Devils won six of the next eight points to go up 18-15. Ursinus won four of the next five points to tie the set at 19 to only be answered by Dickinson taking six of the next eight points to close out the set at level the match at one.
Dickinson gained the early advantage in the third set by going up 4-1 and eventually extending their lead to 6-3. Ursinus won three straight points to tie the set at six, but the Red Devils took eight of the next 10 points to go up 14-8. The Bears began to rally by taking five of the next six points to make it a 15-13 set and won six of the next eight points after three straight Dickinson points to cut the lead down to 20-19. The teams each traded three-straight point wins and a service error from the Bears left the Red Devils at set point at 24-22. However, Ursinus staved off set point with three-straight of their own to go up 25-24 to start a marathon third set of extra points. The Bears and Red Devils battled back and forth and each gained a set point advantage, but ultimately Ursinus surged ahead with three-straight kills to win the set 31-29.
After each team won four straight points to open the fourth set, the Bears won five of the next seven points after being down 9-7 to go up 12-9. The Bears worked their advantage out to 14-11 to only be answered by Dickinson winning four of the next five points to tie the set at 15. After the Bears went up 17-15, Dickinson won eight of the next 10 points in a decisive run to go up 23-19 in the set. Ursinus won three straight points to cut the lead down to 23-22 before two kills forced a fifth set. Dickinson used the momentum from winning the fourth set by winning the first six points of the fifth set and never trailed in the final frame to win the match.
The Bears conclude their Centennial Conference slate on Wednesday, November 1st as they will travel to face Bryn Mawr at 7:00 p.m.
