COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Soccer team gained an early lead and never looked back as they shutout Bryn Athyn 3-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Patterson Field.
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-3 overall and won their third-straight in the series over Bryn Athyn. Meanwhile, the Lions fell to 3-4-1 overall on the season.
Ursinus held advantage in the Lions zone early despite not getting a shot on net until the 16th minute. However, once the Bears got one on the Lions net, the chances became plenty. After three saves were made in a three-minute span, the Bears led a full field rush that ended in their first goal of the game in the 22nd minute. Senior
Nick Balbierer sent a long ball to classmate
Harry Lorenc just past midfield and he led a 3-on-2 towards the net. Lorenc gave the ball to Mollis and he had his shot saved before Lorenc knocked in the rebound for his second goal of the season. Sophomore
Julian Faust added to the Bears lead less than three minutes later after getting a pass through traffic from junior
Patrick Tormey. Bryn Athyn had a free kick from a favorable spot in the center of the 20-yard line in the 38th minute that was saved by first-year goalkeeper
Josiah Moore. Junior
Luke Luehrs had a pair of decent looks at the net saved in the final five minutes and sophomore
Enver Desic had a header saved from just in front of the net in the 43rd minute.
Faust quickly notched his second goal of the night just 25 seconds into the second half when he beat the Lions goalkeeper from the right after getting a feed from first-year
Declan Curran. The Bears nearly got one more in the 57th minute when senior
Tommy Mollis sent a shot off the crossbar. Bryn Athyn's best chance came in the 69th minute when a free kick was sent on target but into the hands of Moore. The Bears continued to dominate possession and locked down their sixth shutout of the season.
The Bears held a sizable 33-7 shot advantage for the game and a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus also was awarded all eight corner kicks in the contest. Moore earned his first collegiate shutout after making two saves in the full 90 minutes. Lions goalkeeper Troy Billingslea suffered the loss after making 13 saves and allowing three goals in the full time. Faust recorded his second multi-goal contest of the season to surge to the team lead with six. Three different players recorded assists on the night.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, October 7th as they will host Swarthmore for Kids Day at 12:00 p.m.
