Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw Against Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Julian Faust connected on a penalty kick goal in the first half, leading the Ursinus College men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon.

With the draw, Ursinus moves to 7-3-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Garnet sit at 1-6-4 overall and 0-2-3 in conference play.

Swarthmore opened the contest with the first two shots of the game, but with the first being blocked and the second missing wide the game remained scoreless. Ursinus answered with back-to-back shots midway through the first half from sophomores Julian Faust and Colin Deal, but each were denied by the Garnet defense. With under two minutes remaining in the first half, Faust made a move along the near end line and was tripped by a Swarthmore defender inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. The sophomore forward stepped up and delivered a right-footed shot towards the bottom right of the net to give Ursinus a 1-0 advantage. For Faust, it was his seventh goal of the season and his second consecutive game with a goal after scoring twice on Tuesday against Bryn Athyn.

During the 50th minute, Ursinus had a trio of chances as Mollis had his shot saved by the Swarthmore netminder. The deflection found senior Joshua Coster whose shot was blocked before Faust added the final shot but his scoring chance was saved by Swarthmore's Chrisitan BIgnotti. The Garnet answered during the 56th minute as back-to-back shots on goal were saved by the Bears' netminder Zach Matik. Swarthmore's offense broke though in the 60th minute as a through ball from Stathis Kalathias found Len Yamabe for the equalizer on a bouncing shot towards the right post. With 20:13 remaining in the second half, Deal was tripped up just outside the box by a Swarthmore defender. First-year Declan Curran stepped up and delivered a line drive kick just above the right post to keep the game tied.

Two minutes later during a breakaway, Swarthmore's Adrien Marcelli just missed high of the net during a one-on-one opportunity to keep the game tied. The Garnet earned a corner kick opportunity shortly after, but the Bears defense stood tall and denied the scoring chance. With 11:30 remaining in the contest, Deal nearly had a breakaway down the sideline but a sliding tackle from Swarthmore led to a Bears corner kick. During the corner chance, senior Kai Haynes one-timer shot was saved by the Garnet netminder to keep the game tied. With ten minutes to go during a Garnet corner kick, the ball bounced freely inside the box and found a Swarthmore forward. Swarthmore's Matthew Lorig shot just missed wide of the post resulting in the 1-1 draw.

The Garnet held a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. In goal, Matik recorded a game-high six saves increasing his team-lead to 28, meanwhile Swarthmore's netminder Bignotti tallied five saves over 90 minutes of action.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, October 10th as they host Delaware Valley University for a non-conference matchup starting at 7:30 p.m.
