COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Fueled by a red-hot offense, the Ursinus Men's Basketball team cruised to a 92-54 triumph over Rosemont on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action in Helfferich Hall.
With the win, the Bears improved to 2-2 overall as they completed their early stretch of non-conference games before starting Centennial play next week. Meanwhile, the Ravens of the United East Conference fell to 0-4 overall.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Bears in the contest which was led by senior
Trevor Wall with a game-high 18 points behind going 8-of-13 from the field. Wall also added five assists, four rebounds, and two steals in the win. A pair of first-years had dynamic showings from beyond the arc as
Patrick Downes poured in 16 points behind shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. Classmate
Luke Nieman went a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc to total 12 points and grabbed three steals. Junior
Marlin Wise recorded 14 points after going 6-of-9 from the field and snatched four rebounds.
Ursinus opened the game with the first six points scored to go up 6-0 before the Ravens countered with an 11-4 run to take their first lead of the game at 11-10 with 15:22 left in the first half. The lead, however, was short-lived as the Bears heated up and went on a 15-3 run to take a 25-14 advantage with 10:28 left in the first half. Ursinus continued to shoot well from the field and built their lead up to the largest of the first half at 36-21 with 6:30 left in the first half. Rosemont fought back with nine-straight points to make it a 36-30 game at the 4:27-mark before the Bears closed the first half on an 11-3 run to go up 47-33 into the locker rooms.
The Bears hit the gas early in the second half and pulled away for good by opening on a 17-4 run to take a 64-37 lead at the 14:22-mark. Ursinus allowed just 21 Raven points in the second half and put the game away by reaching the 30-point lead mark at the 9:54-mark. The Bears did not let the lead go under 30 points the rest of the game and stretched its lead to the largest of the day at 92-54 which ended up being the final. Three of the last four Ursinus baskets in the contests were three-pointers.
Ursinus shot a sizzling 54.8 percent (34-of-62) from the field and exactly 50 percent (12-of-24) from beyond the arc. The Bears went a near perfect 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the free throw line and held a whopping 37-23 edge in rebounds that led to an 11-4 edge in second chance points. Ursinus scored 23 points off 22 Raven turnovers as well. Rosemont shot 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the field and just 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three-point range. The Ravens went 13-of-19 (68.4%) and got 23 points from its bench.
Zaki Gomez led the Ravens with a team-high 17 points behind going 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range off the bench. Denelle Holly tallied 10 points, four steals, three assists, and two rebounds.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, November 21st as they will travel to face Franklin & Marshall in their Centennial Conference opener at 8:00 p.m.
