Men's Basketball Edged in Overtime by McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus Men's Basketball team lost in overtime 72-70 to McDaniel on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

Senior Trevor Wall paced four Bears in double-figures with 18 points and added four rebounds and two assists. Junior Marlin Wise tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks while sophomore Mohamed Toure posted 12 points, five rebounds, along with two steals. Junior Cole Grubbs scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Bears as well.

McDaniel gained an early 8-2 advantage at the 17:45-mark before using a 9-4 burst to take their largest lead of the game at 17-6 with 13:51 left in the first half. The Bears fought back and used a 19-8 run over a span of just over eight and a half minutes to tie the game at 25. Wise put the Bears in front at 32-30 for the first time in the contest with a three-pointer and the Green Terror responded with a jumper to tie things at the half.

Much like the start of the first half, the Green Terror had the hot hand to start as they opened the second half on a 13-4 run to go up 45-34 at the 14:56-mark. Ursinus rallied yet again, this time with a 15-4 run to tie the game at 49 with 9:47 left in regulation. McDaniel surged ahead with a six-point lead at 59-53 with 4:53 left in regulation before the Bears worked their way back to take a 62-61 lead with exactly two minutes left following a three-point play from Wall. The teams missed shots on their respective ensuing possessions and Wall was fouled and sent to the line with 30 seconds left in regulation. Wall split his free throws which allowed the Green Terror to tie things up on a short jumper and force overtime.

Playing their second straight overtime contest, the Bears scored the first five points of the extra session and went up 68-63 at the 3:22-mark. Two free throws from Wall put Ursinus up 70-64 with 1:51 remaining, but the Green Terror quickly evaporated that lead by scoring five points in a span of 40 seconds to make it a 70-69 game with 46 seconds left. A travel in the paint by the Bears set up McDaniel to hit the game-winning three-pointer from the top of the key with eight seconds left.

The Bears shot 37 percent (20-of-54) from the field, 35 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 71.9 percent (23-of-32) from the free throw line. McDaniel shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field, 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from three-point range, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line. Each team grabbed 36 total rebounds in the contest.
