COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A late run from 10th-ranked Swarthmore doomed the Ursinus Men's Basketball team as they dropped a 74-58 contest to the Garnet on Tuesday night in Centennial Conference action at Helfferich Hall.
Senior
Ryan Hughes turned in a gutsy performance with a team-high 16 points along with four rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Junior
Trevor Wall posted 11 points and two steals while sophomore
Marlin Wise added 10 points behind going 5-of-7 from the field plus six rebounds off the bench.
After last month's thriller, the game started in a similar path as each team traded buckets through the first portion of the first half. The Garnet did not trail in the first half, but the scrappy Bears hung around and did not trail by more than five points for the first 13 minutes of the contest. Swarthmore extended its lead to its largest of the first half to 24-15 at the 2:48-mark before the Bears rattled off nine-straight points to tie the game at 24 entering halftime. Six of the points in the run for Ursinus came from Wise while freshman
Nick Nocito added a three-pointer in the mix.
Sophomore
Cole Grubbs put the Bears in front for the first time in the game at 26-24 in the opening minute of the second half. However, the Garnet used an 18-4 run to go up 42-30 with 15:12 left in regulation. Swarthmore maintained at least a six point advantage for the next seven minutes until the Bears cut their lead down to 50-46 at the 8:27-mark. Hughes made six consecutive free throws in the rally with four coming from a personal foul/technical foul situation. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Garnet squashed any remaining hopes of a potential upset with a 22-6 run over the next seven minutes and went up 72-52 with just over a minute left in the second half.
The Bears shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field and just 3-of-19 (15.8%) from three-point range. Ursinus went 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line and forced 16 Swarthmore turnovers. Meanwhile, the Garnet shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field behind going 57.7 percent in the second half. Swarthmore shot 37 percent (10-of-27) from three-point range after going 63.6 percent (6-of-11) in the second half while shooting a near perfect 14-of-15 (93.3%) from the free throw line.
Vinny DeAngelo poured in a game-high 28 points for Swarthmore behind going 10-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, February 11th as they will travel to Washington College for a 4:00 p.m. contest in their final regular season road trip.
