No. 20 Men's Lacrosse Suffers Setback to No. 1 RIT

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 20 Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team was bested in a battle of nationally-ranked teams on Saturday afternoon against No. 1 RIT as the Tigers won 17-10 at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field on Saturday evening.
 
 
The Bears saw their three-game winning streak snapped as their overall record now stands at 4-2. Meanwhile, the two-time defending national champion Tigers improved to 5-0 overall.
 
 
RIT took advantage of a turnover off the Bears initial faceoff win and scored 50 seconds into the game to go up 1-0. The Tigers quickly added to their lead just 17 seconds later to extend its lead to 2-0. Ursinus battled back as senior Tyler Neal got the Bears on the board at the 13:27-mark of the first quarter. Senior Jeremy Calabro then notched his first of the game just under two minutes later to even the game at two. RIT countered with a pair of goals of their own to go back up two goals at 4-2 until freshman Harry Sweitzer scored at the 8:18-mark to make it 4-3 game. Once again, the Tigers countered with two quick goals before junior Brett Wilkinson scored on a man-up opportunity to cut the RIT lead down to 6-4 at the 2:41-mark. However, RIT added two more goals to go up 8-4 and complete a high-scoring first quarter. Neal scored his second of the day just 32 seconds into the second quarter to cut the Tigers lead down to 8-5 and the Tigers matched it just under two minutes later to make it 9-5. Defense ruled the rest of the second quarter as neither team scored in the final 12 minutes.
 
 
The decisive quarter in the contest came in the third quarter as RIT outscored the Bears 6-1 to go up 15-6 into the final 15 minutes. The Tigers registered the first six goals of the quarter before sophomore Christopher Pucciarelli ended the run at the 1:28-mark of the third quarter. Senior Tyler Falco ended a long Bears possession to open the fourth quarter with a goal to cut the lead down to 15-7, but the Tigers responded yet again as they went up 16-7. Senior Chase Rondeau recorded his first goal of the season while Calabro posted his second of the day later in the fourth quarter. Senior Jake Ojert capped the scoring by just beating the final buzzer to complete the score at 17-10.
 
 
RIT held a 51-45 edge in shots and a 31-23 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers held a slight 36-35 edge in ground balls and forced 24 Bears turnovers. Ursinus controlled the faceoff X on the day as sophomore Dominic Nottoli won 16-of-24 faceoffs and grabbed a season-high nine ground balls. Bears sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Singer suffered the loss after making 13 saves in the full 60 minutes while RIT goalkeeper Kyle Burbank earned the win with 14 saves during the full time. Neal paced the Ursinus offense with four points off two goals and two assists and Wilkinson tallied three points with a goal and two assists.
 
Clifford Gaston led the Tigers with a game-high five points off four goals and one assist and Luke Pilcher matched him with four goals.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 18th as they will travel to face St. John Fisher at 1:00 p.m.
