ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 19 Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team rallied for a thrilling 13-12 road win over St. John Fisher on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the win, the Bears improved to 5-2 overall and avenged their defeat last season to the Cardinals at Patterson Field. Meanwhile, the Cardinals fell to 0-4 overall on the season.
The Cardinals opened the scoring on their first possession before the Bears reeled off three-straight goals to go up 3-1 at the 7:04-mark of the first quarter. Senior
Tyler Falco opened the scoring off a shot from the right side after classmate
Tyler Neal charged in from the top and fed him the ball. Neal then gave the Bears their first lead two minutes later before Falco added his second in the quarter to cap the run. St. John Fisher countered with three-straight goals of their own to go up 4-3, but Neal scored a turnaround shot at the 1:38-mark to tie the game at four and give the Bears some momentum headed into the second. Jeremy Calabro notched his first goal of the game at the 11:09-mark of the second quarter after being fed from x by sophomore
Christopher Pucciarelli, making it a 5-4 Ursinus lead. The Cardinals struck back with another pair of goals to go up 6-5 at the 7:26-mark until Neal weaved a shot through traffic to tie the game at six just 1:10 later. Falco then put the Bears in front into halftime with his third goal of the game with a blast from 15 yards out.
St. John Fisher won the opening faceoff of the second half and tied the game at seven on the possession before going back in front at 8-7 at the 13:30-mark following a Bears turnover. However, freshman
Nils Updale won the ensuing faceoff and scored his first collegiate goal to tie up the game once again at eight. However, the Cardinals put together three-straight goals to take their largest lead of the game at 11-8 with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter. Freshman
Barrett Denlinger got the Bears back in the game with consecutive goals to cut the Cardinals lead down to 11-10 into the final quarter. Calabro kept the Ursinus run going by tying the game at 11 at the 11:56-mark of the fourth quarter before putting the Bears back in front on a man-up situation two and a half minutes later. Sophomore
Ryan Dever then extended the Bears advantage 13-11 on a quick transition following a Cardinals turnover at the 6:04-mark. The Cardinals cut the lead back down to one at 13-12 with 3:01 left in regulation, setting the stage for a wild finish. St. John Fisher forced a Bears turnover on the next possession but Bears junior goalkeeper
Jonathan Singer snatched a high shot to hold the Ursinus lead. Senior
Jake Ojert rang a shot off the post with a minute left to give the Cardinals one last chance to tie. Singer came up big once again with a save in the final 10 seconds and a push following a tenacious scramble for the loose ball created one final play in by the Cardinals. The last shot attempt then went high to seal the win for Ursinus.
The Cardinals held a 45-37 edge in total shots while each team tallied 24 shots on net. Ursinus held a 30-23 advantage in ground balls and an 18-11 edge in faceoff wins behind an 11-of-14 mark by Updale. Singer earned a hard-fought win with 12 saves behind a number of clutch saves down the stretch while Cardinals goalkeeper Ben Hammond suffered the loss after making 11 saves in the full 60 minutes. Neal scored a game-high five points behind three goals and two assists. Calabro recorded four points with three goals and one assist while Falco scored a trio. Pucciarelli registered a career-high three assists in the win as well.
Ursinus will return to action on Saturday, March 25th as they will travel to face top-10 ranked Gettysburg to open Centennial Conference play at 3:00 p.m.
