SALISBURY, Md. – On a cold windy Saturday afternoon, the Ursinus College softball team dropped a two-game series on the road at No.3 Salisbury University.
During game one, Ursinus jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Salisbury scored seven runs over the next three innings to capture a 7-3 lead. The Bears scored twice in the fifth inning and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh but a flyout gave the Seagulls an 8-5 victory. In the nightcap, Salisbury jumped out to an 8-0 lead through two innings before adding four runs in the fourth and tallying the final three outs for a 12-0 victory.
Game One: Ursinus 5, No.3 Salisbury 8
The Bears struck first in the top half of the second scoring three runs as first-year
Kayla Carr led off with a single down the right field line and advanced to second as junior
Maddie Solow earned a free pass. Senior
Allyson Meakim put Ursinus on the scoreboard with a two-run double into left center and later advanced to third when senior
Jordan Moore slashed a single into right field. With runners on the corners, the Bears added their final of the inning when Meakim swiped home to give Ursinus a 3-0 lead.
The Seagulls answered back in their half of the inning tying the contest at three a piece behind a walk, a single, and two doubles. First-year pitcher
Christa Andrusiewicz stranded a runner in scoring position as she recorded a pop to retire the side. Ursinus added two leadoff baserunners in the third as senior
Amanda Panati and sophomore
Stephanie Wichman recorded base hits to leadoff the inning. After a Salisbury pitching change, the rally ended as a 4-6-3 double play and pop out ended the Bears chance.
The Seagulls added two runs in the third and fourth inning increasing their lead to 7-3 through the first four innings. Ursinus responded in the top half of the fifth inning scoring two runs cutting Salisbury lead to just two. Junior
Madison Wilson opened the inning with a single up the middle and advanced into scoring position when sophomore
Samantha Mallen tallied a base hit bunt. The Bears loaded the bases with no outs as Panati singled through the left side of the infield. Wichman recorded an RBI on a single into centerfield as Wilson scored from third and the Bears cut their deficit to two when Panati scored on Salisbury defensive miscue. The Seagulls stranded two runners on base as they escaped the jam by recording a strikeout and groundout to end the frame. Salisbury added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning behind a homerun to give the Seagulls an 8-5 advantage. In their final chance at the plate, the Bears loaded the bases bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Carr led off the inning with a two-out double and later advanced to third as Solow and Meakim tallied free passes. On a 1-1 pitch, Moore slashed a fly ball into right field for the final out of the contest.
Game Two: Ursinus 0, No.3 Salisbury 12 (5 inn.)
After retiring the Bears in the opening frame, the Seagulls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. Salisbury tallied a leadoff baserunner behind a free pass, and she advanced to second on a stolen base, before touching the plate on a single into left field. With a runner on third and zero outs, senior pitcher
Alexis Miller escaped the jam with a pop up, and 7-6-5 double play to end the frame.
Salisbury extended their advantage to eight in the second inning behind scoring seven runs on eight hits and two homeruns jumping out to an 8-0 lead. The Seagulls received both a two-run and three-run homeruns during the inning, while the first six batters each reached base. Salisbury added four runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 12 and after a leadoff walk in the fifth, they retired the Bears for the victory.
At the plate, Panati, Wichman, and Carr led the Ursinus offense recording multi-hit games during the first contest.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Reading, Pennsylvania for a doubleheader against Alvernia University.
