Softball Bested by Moravian in Doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team dropped a pair of contests to Moravian on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Bears were edged 6-2 in game one before dropping a 16-1 game two contest in five innings.

The pair of losses drop the Bears to 9-5 overall as they played their first games back in Pennsylvania since their opener on February 26th. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds improved to 9-3 overall.

Game 1: Moravian 6, Ursinus 2

First-year pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz worked her way out of a bases-load two-out jam in the bottom of the first by getting a strike out to keep the game scoreless after one. However, the bottom of the second was less than fortunate for the Bears as the Greyhounds scored four runs off three hits to go up 4-0. All four Moravian runs came with two outs behind a pair of singles and a double. The Greyhounds loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the third and pushed across a fifth run on a single that just snuck through the left side of the infield. Ursinus finally found themselves in business during the top of the sixth as they put runners on second and third base following a pair of errors with one out. Sophomore Stephanie Wichman recorded the Bears first hit of the contest in a big way with two outs in the sixth behind a two-run single to cut the deficit down to 5-2. Moravian countered with another two-out run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-2 and the Bears were retired in order during the seventh to close out the game.

Game 2: Moravian 16, Ursinus 1 (5 innings)
Wichman got the Bears first hit this time in the top of the first with two outs before a pop up ended the threat. Moravian jumped on Ursinus right away in the bottom of the first as their leadoff hitter doubled to right center and came around to score off a sacrifice fly. Moravian loaded the bases with two outs, but senior pitcher Alexis Miller escaped the jam by getting a force out at second. Much like game one, the Greyhounds had a big bottom of the second inning by scoring five runs to take a 6-0 advantage. Four of the runs came with two outs off two-straight singles and a double. The Greyhounds added two more runs in the bottom of the third off a home run and a third off a single with all coming after the second out was recorded. Ursinus had their best opportunity in the top of the fourth when first-year Kayla Carr singled to open the frame and junior Maddie Solow followed with a double. Senior Jordan Moore got pinch runner Anna Mefford home with a groundout to first to make it 9-1. However, the Greyhounds busted the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 16-1.

Wichman finished the doubleheader by going a combined 2-of-4 from the plate with the pair of RBI's tallied in game one. Moore went 1-of-2 from the dish in game two and added an RBI off a groundout.

Sarah DeStefano had a strong day from the plate and circle by going a combined 6-of-8 between the two games with three RBI's. She earned the win in game two behind throwing four innings of one-run ball while allowing four hits and striking out two. Madi Cunningham flirted with a no-hitter in game one and allowed two unearned runs off two hits with four strikeouts in her full seven innings of work. Emily Silberman went a combined 5-of-8 from the plate and drove in six runs while hitting a home run.

The Bears now return to action on Saturday, March 18th as they will host Catholic for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. in an addition to the schedule.
