CAMDEN, N.J. – On a cold, wet, and rainy afternoon the Ursinus College Baseball team was swept by Rutgers-Camden (15-10, 5-0) in conference action on Saturday.
In game one, Ursinus led 10-4 before the Scarlet Raptors stormed back scoring 11 runs over the final seven innings for the 15-10 victory. During the nightcap, Ursinus was held to just five hits as Rutgers-Camden swept the doubleheader with a 5-0 victory.
Game One: Rutgers-Camden 15, Ursinus 10
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning after capitalizing on a few defensive miscues. Junior
Will Kelley led off the ballgame with a walk and later advanced to third after base hits from sophomore
Jordan Williams and senior
Solomon Griffith. With the bases loaded, Kelley scored on a
Tom Snipes groundout while Williams and Griffith crossed the plate on wild pitches. The Scarlet Raptors answered in their half at the plate as a bases loaded ground out cut their deficit to two. Junior left-hander
T.J. Snyder escaped the jam with a punch out and ground out to end the frame.
In the second, Ursinus again loaded the bases with no outs and would add three runs from two walks and one hit. Sophomore
Andrew Richter scored on an error and senior
Nick Diaz added a run on a wild pitch. The Bears increased their lead to 6-1 when Griffith lifted a sacrifice fly to right field scoring sophomore
Jakob Cantor from third. Rutgers-Camden cut their deficit to two in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs off two hits and one Bears' error.
Ursinus answered in the third inning scoring four runs behind two hits and two walks. Sophomore
Peter Balos led off the inning with a triple and scored when sophomore
Ben Cuccolo lifted a double into right center field. Cuccolo later scored on a balk and the Bears added two more runs behind an error on the Scarlet Raptors. With Ursinus leading 10-4, Rutgers-Camden battled back scoring three runs to cut their deficit to three.
The Scarlet Raptors pitching staff would settle down allowing just three hits over the final six frames, while their offense added eight runs in the middle innings to come away with the victory. Cuccolo led the Bears at the plate finishing 2-of-5 with an RBI, and two extra-base hits. Griffith, Snipes, and Kelley each finished with a base hit and an RBI.
Game Two: Rutgers-Camden 5, Ursinus 0
In game two, Kelley led off with a single through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on sacrifice bunt from first-year
Kyle Rosenfeld. Kelley later advanced to third on a throwing error but was cut down at the plate trying to score after an outfield assist from the Scarlet Raptors centerfielder. In the bottom of the first, Senior right-hander
Casey Murphy got the start in game two on the mound and retired the side in order.
In the bottom of the second, Murphy made it six consecutive batters retired to start the game after recording a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame. The Bears stranded two runners on base in the third inning as a strikeout ended the Ursinus rally. Rutgers-Camden got on the board first with a lead off homerun in the third inning. Murphy settled in on the mound retiring the next three batters via flyouts.
In the top of the fourth inning, Balos led off with a single into centerfield and advanced to second on his first stolen base of the season. He would be stranded at third as a strikeout and ground ended the frame. Rutgers-Camden added two insurance runs in the fourth inning, behind a two-out single increasing their lead to 3-0. The Scarlet Raptors stretched their lead to five in the bottom of the fifth inning, as three consecutive hits sparked a two-out rally.
Sophomore pitcher
Mike Scheller relieved Murphy in the sixth inning and was stellar over his three innings of work. Scheller allowed just three hits and struck out one batter over his three frames and enforced six groundouts over the 11 batters he faced. Unfortunately, Ursinus could not overcome the early deficit and would fall 5-0 in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Balos and Cantor paced the Ursinus offense with two base hits apiece, while Kelley finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
The Bears will return to action on Monday as they host MIT at 3:30 for their annual Pack the Den series.
