Softball Breaks Bats Out in Sweep Over PSU Altoona and Cazenovia

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH S.C. – The Ursinus softball team's offense came alive on Wednesday as they swept a pair of games against Penn State Altoona and Cazenovia during their Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic trip. The Bears downed the Nittany Lions 16-4 to avenge their Monday defeat and followed by taking down Cazenovia 13-1 in five innings.

With the wins, the Bears improved to 7-1 overall and their second daily sweep of their opponents down in North Myrtle. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions and Wildcats both fell to 2-4 overall.

Ursinus 16, Penn State Altoona 4
After a scoreless 2 ½ innings to start, the Nittany Lions scored three runs off three hits in the bottom of the third to take the initial 3-0 advantage. Altoona put runners on first and second with one out and a triple to right field brought home two of the runs. However, from the top of the fourth inning on, it was all Bears as they began their rally by responding to tie the game with three runs that all came with two outs. Junior Sarah DiLello started the rally with a single to advance classmate Maddie Solow to second base and senior Jordan Moore followed with a single to get the Bears on the board. Junior Madison Wilson tied the game with a hard hit ball to left field to tie up the game. Ursinus stayed red hot at the plate in the top of the fifth as they took the lead for good with five runs on four hits while taking advantage of two Nittany Lion errors. Senior Amanda Panati opened the frame with a single and sophomore Stephanie Wichman followed by blasting a double to left field, scoring her all the way from first to give the Bears their first lead of the game. A dropped fly ball in right field scored a second Bears run before the third run came around to score on a wild pitch. The Bears capped their inning by getting runs across from a sacrifice fly from Moore and another fielding error.

Wichman took advantage of a dropped foul ball in the top of the sixth by roping a ball over the Nittany Lions right fielders head to leg out a triple. She then came around to score in the next at-bat when Carr hit a long foul ball down the right field line to make it 9-3. The Nittany Lions got a run back in the bottom of the sixth from a sacrifice fly of their own before the Bears blew the game open in the top of the seventh. Moore got things started after the first out with a single and came all the way around to score from first after the Altoona centerfielder misplayed a Wilson single. Sophomore Samantha Mallen knocked in Wilson with a single in the next at-bat to make it an 11-4 game and Panati followed with a single of her own to score Mallen from second following a stolen base. After Wichman recorded her second double of the game to score Panati, Carr singled to set the stage for Solow to crush a three-run home run to left to bring the score to its final total of 16-4.

Ursinus 13, Cazenovia 1 (5 innings)

The Bears carried their red-hot bats down to North Myrtle's Central Park and jumped immediately on the Wildcats when Wichman hit a titanic blast to left field following a Panati single to put Ursinus up 2-0 in the top of the first. Ursinus added a pair of runs in the top of the second behind a Wilson single and sacrifice fly from Wichman to go up 4-0. Solow then crushed her second home run of the day to left field in the top of the third to put Ursinus up 6-0 after Carr led off the inning with a single. Cazenovia got their lone run of the game from a bases loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the third with no outs, but first-year pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts plus a pop out. Ursinus countered again in the top of the fourth with two more runs to go up 8-1 behind back-to-back doubles from Carr and Solow that each bounced off the fence. Junior Sara Sullivan continued the Bears home run parade with her first collegiate blast with one out in the 5th to initially enact the run rule. Ursinus added a pair of runs from a Mallen single and Panati ground out before Carr cleared the fence for the Bears fourth and final home run of the game. It was the first four home run game for the Bears since the first game against Immaculata last season on March 29th.

For the day, Ursinus pounded out a combined 29 runs off 31 hits in the victories. Solow hit a pair of home runs between the two games and went a combined 3-of-9 from the plate with four runs scored and six RBI's. Wichman went a sizzling 5-of-8 from the plate with five RBI's, four runs scored, and her first collegiate home run. Wilson went 4-of-7 from the plate between the two games and drove in four while scoring two and Mallen tallied two hits in each game to go 4-of-8, scored two runs, drove in two, plus stole two bases. Carr went 3-of-4 with three runs scored and three RBI's, including her home run, against Cazenovia while Sullivan went a perfect 3-of-3 against the Wildcats with two runs scored and her own home run.

Senior pitcher Alexis Miller earned the win in game one in relief and went a combined 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs off four hits and struck out five batters between the two games. Andrusiewicz earned the game two win in relief after tossing two hitless innings with three strikeouts in game two after starting against Altoona and allowed three unearned runs off five hits and struck out a pair. First-year Riley Coneeny made her collegiate debut in the circle and tossed a scoreless fifth inning against Cazenovia and struck out her first batter at Ursinus.

The Bears return to action tomorrow, March 9th as they will wrap up their time in North Myrtle Beach with games against Clarks Summit at 5:00 p.m. and Delaware Valley at 7:00 p.m.
