Women's Lacrosse Edged by Haverford, 12-11

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A 5-2 run in the final period by Haverford College propelled them past the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team 12-11 on Wednesday evening from Patterson Field.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 7-6 on the season and 3-2 in Centennial Conference action, meanwhile the Fords improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

First-year Ashley Noto led the Bears offense finishing with four goals and one assist, tying a career-high that she set back on April 5th against Swarthmore. Senior Reilly Morgan and sophomore Julia McCann each finished with two goals, while McCann tallied seven draw controls from the circle. McCann also led the Bears with three groundballs, while senior goalkeeper Alexa Machado surpassed the 400 career saves mark moving to fourth all-time in program history.

Ursinus jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage over the first four minutes as a goal from senior Reilly Morgan and two goals from first-year Ashley Noto put the Bears ahead. The Bears offense maintained the early possession as sophomore Julia McCann won the first four draw controls of the contest. For Noto's first goal of the game, she caught the ball behind the net before making a move to create advantage between her and the defender and sent a bouncing shot past the Fords netminder. Noto's second goal came at the 11:04-mark as she brought the ball in from out of play and after sprinting pass a defender, she connected on a goal from seven yards away to put the Bears up three.

The Bears offense continued to roll as Noto found Morgan cutting towards the middle for her second goal of the quarter at the 6:53-mark. Once Morgan received the pass, she sprinted past the Fords netminder and found the back of the net with a backhanded shot to extend the Bears lead to four. Over the final six minutes of the first period, the Bears defense raised to the moment as they stuffed multiple scoring opportunities from the Fords and led 4-0 heading into the second period. Senior goalkeeper Alexa Machado tallied four saves over that time denying each scoring opportunity from Haverford.

The Fords answered in the opening minutes of the second stanza as a goal from Tiffany Mikulis cut the Bears lead to three at the 11:42-mark. The Bears would respond as they increased their lead to five with back-to-back goals from sophomores Grace Lynch and Julia McCann. After a successful clear attempt, Noto found Lynch behind the net and Lynch sprinted around the side of the cage and sent a left-handed shot to the near post for her first goal of the game at the 9:01-mark. Senior Julie Cherneskie won the ensuing draw control and McCann capitalized with space at the top of the circle creating space between her and the defender before sending a shot into the back of the net for her first of the game. Haverford closed out the final five minutes of the first half with back-to-back goals, but Ursinus still led 6-3 at the break.

Haverford quickly scored the first goal of the second half as Sam Silverman found the back of the net to cut the Bears lead to two at the 14:12-mark. Sophomore Maeve Leonzi answered for the Bears with her first goal of the game and stretch the Bears lead to three with 8:55 remaining in the period. The Fords used a 2-0 run over the next three minutes to cut their deficit to one at the 6:53-mark. Each team traded goals, before a goal from McCann with four seconds remaining in the period gave Ursinus a 9-7 heading into the final stanza.

Haverford opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals to tie the game at nine a piece with 11:51 remaining in the contest. Ursinus quickly responded as Cherneskie won the ensuing draw control and junior Mary Michaud capitalized on a scoring opportunity to give Ursinus a one-point advantage.  The Fords bounced back with a 2-0 run over the next minute of action to recapture an 11-10 lead at the 9:00 mark. Each defense stepped up over the next five minutes of action as both goalies were credited with a save, but the Fords connected on a shot from Mikulis to extend their lead to 12-10. With under three minutes to play, Noto connected on a goal to score her fourth of the game and tying a career best. The Bears earned one final chance with under 30 seconds remaining, but an offensive foul was called against Ursinus and the Fords held on to a 12-11 victory.
