COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team were unable to overcome a 4-0 deficit in the fourth inning as they fell to Dickinson College 9-0 on Monday afternoon.
After the game was postponed on April 22 due to rain, the Bears opened Monday's contest in the 4
th inning trailing 4-0. With the defeat, Ursinus falls to 16-24 on the season and 8-10 in Centennial Conference action, meanwhile the Red Devils improved to 21-15-1 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
Ursinus added a two-out baserunner in the fifth frame behind a single from sophomore
Jordan Williams, but he would be stranded on base as a pop up ended the frame. First-year
Dan Bass relieved classmate
Max Shilstone in the previous inning on the mound and after allowing a one-out single, he collected back-to-back ground outs to end the frame.
In the sixth inning, senior
Solomon Griffith added a base hit up the middle, but a fly out and groundout ended the Bears threat. The Red Devils added three runs in the bottom half of the frame to extend their lead to 7-0. Dickinson reached base twice in the inning from free passes, while a wild pitch and two-out single each allowed runs to cross the plate.
The Bears nearly answered in the seventh as one-out singles from sophomores
Dylan Runsdorf and
Andrew Richter put two runners on, but a fly out and fielders choice ended the inning for Ursinus. The Red Devils added runs in the seventh and eighth innings to stretch their advantage to nine and unfortunately Ursinus was unable to overcome the early deficit falling 9-0.
At the plate, Griffith led the way finishing 3-for-4, while Runsdorf added a mulit-hit performance finishing 2-for-4. On the mound, Bass pitched 4.2 innings allowing five hits, five earned runs, four walks, and struck out four batters.
The Bears wrap up their 2023 schedule and first season under Head Coach
Kyle Lindsay with eight wins in conference play which ranks as the most in a season since the 2017 campaign. The Bears defeated two nationally ranked opponents this season, including #2 Salisbury, 6-3, on March 15 and #4 Johns Hopkins, 6-4, on April 8
