Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw against Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Susquehanna University on Wednesday evening from Sassafras Field.

With the draw Ursinus moves to 3-2-2 on the season, meanwhile the River Hawks of the Landmark Conference sit at 1-4-1 overall.

The Rivers Hawks took an early 1-0 lead at the 7:26-mark after being awarded a corner kick, an arching pass from Emily Wertz found the head of teammate Gilian Maack for a goal. The Bears quickly responded with a shot on goal during the 8th minute as senior Liv Morrow fired a shot towards the top right of the net but was saved by the River Hawks. Each team traded scoring opportunities during the 17th and 18th minute as Susquehanna's Maack had her scoring chance denied by Bears senior goalkeeper Maddie Nau to keep the deficit at one. Ursinus answered again with a shot from Morrow, but Kayleigh Saboja was awarded the save for the River Hawks. During the 26th minute, an Ursinus corner kick attempt led to a foul in the box by Susquehanna resulting in a penalty kick for the Bears.

Junior Grace Senese stepped up and drilled her shot towards the upper left corner of the goal to beat the outstretched arms of the Rivers Hawks netminder to tie the game at one a piece. Nau yet again denied a Susquehanna shot attempt during the 30th minute before each team went into the halftime break tied at one a piece. Ursinus earned the first shot of the second half, before the River Hawks answered with a shot of their own with each being turned away from the opposing goalkeepers. Much of the second half remained a battle in the midfield as neither team created any scoring chances on goal throughout the remainder of the contest to force the 1-1 draw.

Susquehanna held a 9-6 edge in shots while barely edging the Bears 5-4 in shots on goal. Nau was credited with four saves with Susquehanna's recording three saves over 90 minutes of action.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they host No. 4 Johns Hopkins for a Centennial Conference matchup starting at noon.
