Women's Soccer Falls to No. 6 Johns Hopkins in CC Home Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Ursinus College women's soccer team eventually fell to No. 6 Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

With the loss, Ursinus moves to 3-3-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays improved to 6-1-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.

First-year Madison Bjorndahl scored her first collegiate goal for the Bears in 8th minute, while senior goalkeeper Maddie Nau recorded a career-high 14 saves to lead the Ursinus defense. For the Blue Jays Rylie Mutton paced the offense with two goals on four shots, while goalkeeper Eva Breiland earned the victory in net with two saves.

Ursinus struck first in the 8th minute as senior Ciara Rago sent a line-drive shot from outside the box that deflected off the crossbar and finding the foot of Bjorndahl in front of the net. The first-year forward sent her past a diving Johns Hopkins goalkeeper to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays quickly responded with three consecutive shots, but the Bears defense stood tall and Nau denied each opportunity. Johns Hopkins tied the match at one a piece in the 30th minute when Mutton scored her first goal of the game after subbing on shortly prior. Nau continued to shine for the Bears defense as she collected two more saves before the half to bring total to nine at the halftime break with the score tied at one.

The Bears continued to deny the Blue Jays scoring opportunities throughout the first few minutes of the second half, as Nau was credited with two more saves. Hopkins broke though in the 51st minute as Lily Gaston scored to make the score 2-1. During the 68th minute, sophomore Alicia Page nearly tied the game at two a piece after a cross into the box led to a header from Paige that was saved by Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays added two more goals during the 71st and 79th minute in route to the 4-1 decision.

The Bears will return to action on Tuesday, September 26th as they host Eastern University for a non-conference matchup, before returning to Centennial Conference action on Saturday for a contest against Washington College.
