CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Two second half goals proved to be the difference as the Ursinus College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Washington College from Roy Kirby Stadium on Saturday evening.
With the loss the Bears moved to 6-3 on the season and 1-3 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Shoremen improved to 5-0-5 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play.
Washington College tallied the first two shots of the contest, as the first was saved by junior netminder
Zach Matik and the second missed high of the net. During the first opportunity, a cross into the box led to a header by Katim Njie but his scoring chance found the gloves of Matik in goal. Each team struggled to create scoring chances throughout the first half as much of the battle occurred in the midfield. During the 19
th minute, Ursinus nearly tallied the opening score, but senior
Tommy Mollis shot missed high of the net. After a goal kick and a great touch from an Ursinus forward, Mollis created space within the box between two defenders, but his opportunity was denied by the Shoremen defense. Later in the first half, Washington College earned two corner kick chances with each opportunity being turned by the Bears defense to keep the contest tied at zero heading into halftime.
The Shoremen earned the opening goal of the contest during the 46
th minute, as Njie assisted on a goal from Cole Gifford to give Washington College a 1-0 advantage. Njie made a run down the near sideline before sending a cross into the box that deflected off a Bears defender and finding Gifford crashing on the back post for the opening goal. Wahington College added an insurance goal during the 55
th minute after capitalizing on a free kick opportunity just outside the box in the Bears defensive territory. After a foul on Ursinus, Washington College's Harrison Malone sent a line drive cross towards the back post and found a leaping Chris Comber for his second goal of the season. Comber's header bounced towards the opposite post and past defense resulting in the two-goal lead. The Bears offense continued the pressure and nearly added a goal during the 71
st minute as a shot from junior
Luke Luehrs was just barely saved. Inside the box, Mollis sent a pass to Luehrs and his left footed curling shot was turned away by a diving save from Washington College's netminder. Ursinus fired two more shots on net with both being denied by the Shoremen defense resulting in the 2-0 road defeat.
The Shoremen held a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Washington College was credited with three corner kick opportunities compared to just two for Ursinus, while a total of 42 fouls were called during the contest. Washington College's goalkeeper Anthony Pinto earned the victory in goal behind two saves, while junior
