CHESTERTOWN, Md. – During a back-and-forth battle, the Ursinus women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Washington College on Saturday evening.
With the draw Ursinus moved to 4-3-3 on the season and 0-1-2 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen sit at 4-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action.
The Shorewomen offense was in rhyme to start the contest, firing three shots over the first five minutes of the action. Their first scoring opportunity, a header missed wide right of the net, while the next two chances were denied by the Bears defense and senior goalkeeper
Maddie Nau. During the 13
th minute, Washington College put together a trio of corner kick opportunities but came away empty handed as the Bears denied each chance. The Bears offense responded at the 20:55-mark as senior
Ciara Rago nearly recorded a shot on goal, but her scoring chance was blocked by the Shorewomen defense. Each defense continued to stand tall during the final moments of the first half as both teams struggled to create scoring chances on goal leading to a 0-0 tie at the halftime break.
During the opening five minutes of the second half, Washington College recorded back-to-back shots wide right of the net to keep the game tied. The Bears bounced back as senior
Ciara Rago fired a shot on goal during the 52
nd minute, but her scoring chance was saved by the Shorewomen's netminder. Each team traded shots during the 66
th minute as Washington College's forward Bridget Whiteside missed high and first-year
Madison Bjorndahl missed wide of the net to keep the game tied. With under three minutes to play, Washington College nearly connected on an open scoring opportunity just outside the box, but the shot was blocked by the Bears defense. With under forty seconds remaining, Rago was tripped up just outside the box leading to a free kick opportunity for the Bears. Junior
Grace Senese's shot just missed high of the crossbar finish with the 0-0 draw between the Centennial Conference opponents.
Washington College held a 24-4 advantage in shots while tallying nine corner kick opportunities compared to just three for Ursinus. In goal, Nau was outstanding collecting a game-high nine saves while Washington College's Hannah Sharpe recorded one save over 90 minutes of action. Today's contest marks the fifth time this season Ursinus has shutout an opposing team, including Nau's fourth shutout of her senior season.
