Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offense Sparks Men's Soccer past Immaculata, 5-2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Colin Deal and senior Tommy Mollis each recorded two goals, leading the Ursinus College men's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Immaculata University on Wednesday evening from Patterson Field.

With the victory the Bears improved to 3-0 on the short season, meanwhile the Mighty Macs of the Atlantic East Conference fell to 0-1-2 overall. "I'm really proud of the entire team," Head Coach Daniel Clitnovici said. "They executed our game plan and brought a real desire to be the best they could be. We took our chances and scored some great goals. We had some real bright spots out there tonight, the lads left it all out on the field and I couldn't ask for anything more."

The Bears offense jumped out to a quick start, firing the first three shots of the contest through the opening eight minutes of action with the final two opportunities just nearly missing the net. At the 10:04-mark, Ursinus broke through with Deal's first goal of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. On a throw-in attempt from the near sideline, junior Patrick Tormey headed the ball finding senior Kai Haynes about 15-yards away from the net. Haines played a touch past the Mighty Macs defense to Deal whose left-footed shot bounced past the Immaculata goalkeeper into the back of the net. Just four minutes later, Ursinus added an insurance goal when Deal added his second goal of the contest off a rebound shot after sneaking his scoring opportunity in between the post and Immaculata netminder.

The offense for the Bears continued to put the pressure on the Mighty Macs defense firing two more shots on goal, until Mollis increased the lead to three with a goal at the 26:30-mark. On the counterattack, sophomore Julian Faust found Deal with a beautiful header to create a two on one opportunity. Deal created some space before sending a pass to Mollis who curled a left-footed shot past the Immaculata defense and into the back of the net.

Ursinus was created with six more shots prior to halftime, including four on goal but took a 3-0 lead into the break. Each defense stood tall through the opening 15 minutes of the second half as neither team created many scoring opportunities. During the 64th minute, the Bears offense broke through again as Mollis recorded his second goal of the contest to increase the Ursinus lead to four. A pass from the back line of Ursinus bounced through the midfield and towards Mollis about 30-yards from goal. Mollis began the attack and created space between he and the Mighty Macs defender before sending a curling right-footed shot into the back of the net. The Bears stretched their lead to five during the 73rd minute, when first-year Simon Muther found junior Luke Luehrs for his second goal of the season. Immaculata added two late goals including a penalty kick to cut the deficit to three, but the Bears lead proved to be too large as Ursinus collected the 5-2 decision.

Ursinus held much of the possession throughout the contest and recorded a 22-10 advantage in shots, including a 19-1 mark in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Kirk Ransome earned the victory in goal behind four saves, while Immaculata's Ryan Straub was dealt the loss after earning 11 saves.

Clitnovici added, "We conceded some late goals and that's a testament to Immaculata's team as they never quit. We switched off a few times and they capitalized, they're a well coached team and they took their chances. We ultimately improved tonight and I'm really proud of the team."

The Bears return to action next Wednesday, September 13th as they host Rosemont College at 7:30 p.m. from Patterson Field.
