COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind a big night from senior
Trevor Wall, the Ursinus Men's Basketball team outlasted Dickinson 74-68 on Thursday night at Helfferich Hall in Centennial Conference action.
With the win, the Bears leveled their overall record to 7-7 while improving to 3-4 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
Wall dazzled for the Bears with a game-high 32 points behind going 12-of-18 from the field and making 8-of-10 free throws. It was his second 30+ point game in the Bears last five games as he continued his strong play since early December that includes four 20+ point games in his last seven. Wall added five assists and three rebounds in the win. Sophomore
Mohamed Toure was the other Bear in double-figures for scoring as he posted 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior
Cole Grubbs tallied a season-high five blocks and posted four points along with four rebounds.
Neither team was able to pull away from the other for the entirety of the first half as the largest lead was held by Ursinus at five points on three separate occasions. There were nine lead changes and seven ties in the first half with the final tie coming by Dickinson hitting a three-pointer with three seconds left in the half. Jaiden Jakubowski put Ursinus up six at 41-35 with 12:51 left in regulation before Wall kept Ursinus up five at 43-38 with a layup moments later. However, the Red Devils quickly struck for eight points in a row behind a pair of three-pointers to take a 49-44 lead with 9:30 left in regulation. A three-point play gave Dickinson their largest lead of the game at 52-46 with 8:34 remaining before the Bears surged back ahead at 57-54 behind an 11-2 run. Luke Nieman hit a three-pointer to give Ursinus a 60-57 lead. That turned out to be the shot that propelled Ursinus ahead for good as they pulled away with a 12-2 run to go up 69-59 in the final minute of the game. The Bears held the Red Devils without a point for a span of 3:25 during that stretch. Ursinus closed out the game by going 8-of-9 from the free throw line in the final minute of the contest.
The Bears shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field and just 20 percent (4-of-20) from three-point range. Ursinus went a solid 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free throw line while each team tallied 39 rebounds apiece. Meanwhile, the Red Devils shot 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the field and 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from three-point range. Dickinson went 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line and had all but one starter finish in double-figures for scoring. Nate Ogbu led Dickinson with a double-double behind 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, January 13th as they will travel to face Gettysburg at 3:00 p.m.
