Hot-Shooting Men's Hoops Dominates Washington College, 97-60

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind a complete performance, the Ursinus Men's Basketball team rolled to a 97-60 win over Washington College in Centennial Conference action at Helfferich Hall on Tuesday evening.

The Bears improved to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in Centennial action as they played their first home game of the 2024 calendar year and since November 28th. Meanwhile, the Shoremen fell to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in conference action.

Senior Trevor Wall bounced back to score a game-high 20 points behind going an efficient 8-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from deep. Wall added three assists and two rebounds as well in the win. Sophomore Mohamed Toure provided a big boost off the bench with a career-high 19 points behind going 7-of-11 from the field and grabbed three rebounds along with two steals. Junior Cole Grubbs posted 11 points after going 5-of-6 from the field while posting three rebounds plus two blocks while his classmate, Marlin Wise, filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, six assists, and five rebounds.

Despite the final score, the Shoremen started well in the contest by making their first two shots to go up 5-1 in the first minute and a half. Washington College held an 11-9 advantage at the 16:08-mark of the first half before the Bears got scorching hot from the field and scored 20 straight points over a span of 4:08 to go up 29-11. Ursinus made eight straight shots during that stretch and forced three Shoremen turnovers. The Bears maintained a 39-23 lead with 7:10 left in the first half until Washington College made a charge to get within eight points at 41-33 behind a 10-2 burst. However, the Bears fended off the run by closing out the final 2:56 on an 11-2 run to go up 52-35 at the half.

Ursinus continued to stay hot from the field as they never let their lead fall below double digits for the rest of the contest. The Shoremen scored the first basket of the second half before the Bears used an 18-6 run to stretch their lead to 70-43 at the 14:06-mark. Toure scored 11 of the 18 points for Ursinus during that run behind a pair of three-pointers. The Bears continued to pour it on the Shoremen as they built a lead as large as 40 points at 90-50 with 4:59 left in regulation.

The Bears shot a sizzling 64.4 percent (38-of-59) from the field and an astounding 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from three-point range. The 16 three-pointers were the most for the Bears since they made 20 back November 18th, 2017, against New Rochelle. Ursinus went 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the free throw line and held a 34-18 rebounding edge that led to a 15-3 advantage in second chance points. Meanwhile, the Shoremen went 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the field and 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from beyond the arc. The Shoremen made all three free throw attempts and Paul Rodolf led the team with 14 points behind going 6-of-9 from the field.

Ursinus returns to action on Thursday, January 11th as they will host Dickinson at 5:00 p.m.
