SWARTHMORE, Pa. – A strong second half from the Garnet proved to be the difference as the Ursinus College women's soccer team fell to Swarthmore College, 4-0, on Friday afternoon from Clothier Field.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 5-5-2 overall and 0-4-1 in Centennial Conference action, while the Garnet improved to 7-1-4 on the season and 4-0-1 in conference play.
Swarthmore was credited with the first three shots of the contest, but each opportunity missed wide of the goal. At the 6:30-mark, the Garnet recorded their first scoring chance on goal, but senior netminder

Taylor Pezulich won a 50-50 ball in the attacking half and sent a left-footed shot on goal that was saved by the Garnet. With 15 minutes remaining in the half, Swarthmore broke the scoreless drought as on a corner kick, Aminah Evans connected on a header that deflected off the crossbar and too the feet of Allie Zitelli for the opening score. Kaleigh Evans recorded a shot after a corner kick, but her opportunity missed high to keep the Garnet ahead, 1-0 at the halftime break.
The Bears defense continued to play as they forced a few shots off target, before Carideo recorded a save on a shot from Ava Gizzie at the 51:46-mark. Ursinus tallied a corner kick during the 56th minute before a shot from junior
Adriana Careless missed high right at the 58:22-mark. Swarthmore added a pair of goals during the 59th and 61st minute to stretch their lead to 3-0 with 29:50 remaining in the contest. Swarthmore's second goal was scored by Celia Kanellakos as she split a few defenders, before sending a shot on goal towards the near post. During the Garnet's third score, Careton received a through ball and sprinted past the Bears defender, creating a one-on-one opportunity, and capitalizing for the goal. Paige Flaugh stepped up for a penalty kick opportunity, but her shot towards the right post was saved by the Garnet netminder. Ursinus was unable to mount a comeback and eventually fell by a score of 4-0.
Swarthmore held a 11-2 advantage in shots on goal and recorded a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Carideo suffered the loss recording seven saves in 90 minutes of action, while Swarthmore's Sofie Aird earned the victory behind one save in 45 minutes of play.
The Bears will return to action on Wednesday, October 16th as they host Haverford College for a 7:30 p.m. start from Patterson Field.
