COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A goal within the final two minutes stuns the Ursinus College women's soccer team as they fell, 1-0 versus Haverford College on Wednesday afternoon from Patterson Field.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 5-6-2 overall and 0-5-1 in Centennial Conference action, while the Fords improved to 10-3-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in Centennial play.
Haverford gained the opening scoring chance of the contest as they recorded back-to-back corners during the fifth minute that were turned away by the Bears defense. Ursinus quickly responded on the counterattack as first-year
Taylor Pezulich fired a shot on goal that was saved by the Fords netminder. After the save, Ursinus tallied consecutive corner kicks but came away empty to keep the contest scoreless. At the 7:45-mark, Haverford nearly connected on the opening score as Grace Haskell earned a one-on-one opportunity. Kaleigh Evans collected her first shot of the game as a corner kick snuck through the box, but her shot soared just above the goal to keep the contest tied at zero. During the 17th minute, Carideo and the Bears defense continued to play well denying back-to-back scoring chances from the Fords. Each team traded corner kick chances, until the senior
Rianne Moll recorded a shot off target at the 37:13-mark. With one minute remaining in the half, Haverford's Olivia D'Aulerio fired a shot on goal that was saved by Carideo as the contest entered halftime tied at zero.
Haverford tallied the first two scoring chances of the second half as D'Aulerio collected consecutive one-on-one opportunities that were by saved by the Bears defense and Carideo in goal. During the 64th minute, the Fords received two corner kicks as the second opportunity was initially punched out by the Bears netminder, but a follow up shot deflected off the top of the crossbar to keep the contest scoreless. Emma Woch received a pass in the attacking half and sent a pass to Evans just outside the box. Evans sent a quick pass to Moll and her left-footed shot just missed wide right of the post to keep Ursinus off the board. At the 85:18-mark, Haverford was awarded a penalty kick, but Haskell's shot towards the right post was denied by Carideo to keep the contest scoreless. Unfortunately, with under two minutes remaining, Haverford's D'Aulerio connected with Haskell for the game-winning goal resulting in a 1-0 defeat for the Bears.
The Fords held a 16-7 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in corner kick opportunities. Carideo suffered the loss in goal behind a career-best 11 saves, while Haverford's Lily Buyer earned the victory collecting one save.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 19th as they hit the road for a Centennial Conference matchup against Bryn Mawr College at 3 p.m.
