SWARTHMORE, Pa. – An early deficit proved to be the difference as the Ursinus College men's soccer team fell 2-0 against Swarthmore College on Saturday evening from Clothier Field.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 6-5-1 overall and 0-5 in Centennial Conference play, while the Garnet improved to 9-3-1 on the season and 2-3 in conference action.
The Garnet opened the scoring in the first minute as Henry Lin assisted Len Yamabe for the go-ahead score at the 0:33-mark. After an Ursinus turnover in the offensive third, Lin sent a pass to midfield finding Yamabe with space at the Garnet's logo at midfield. Yamabe took a touch and sent a line drive shot over the top of the Bears defense and into the back of the cage for the opening score. Ursinus responded with back-to-back shots during the 10th minute as sophomore
Mathias Stegner and junior
Enver Desic each recorded shots for the Bears. Unfortunately, each opportunity missed high of the crossbar to keep the Bears deficit at one. At the 19:11-mark, Ursinus was awarded a free just past midfield and Stegner sent a long arching shot on goal that was saved by the Garnet netminder. The Bears tallied a pair of corner kick chances over the remainder of the first half but came away empty and entered halftime trailing 1-0.
After the Bears defense denied a shot on goal during the 54th minute, Ursinus bounced back with back-to-back shots on target in the 60th minute. Sophomore
Declan Curran ripped the first shot on goal after receiving a deflected pass outside the box, but his opportunity was punched out by the Garnet netminder. After a corner kick, junior
AJ Torres launched a throw into the box finding a pack of Bears in front of the goal. Sophomore defender
Mason Lorah connected on a header, but his opportunity was directed at the Swarthmore goalie and saved to keep the Bears deficit at one. Swarthmore added a late goal at the 86:46-mark from Anzel Zhen to extend their lead to two enroute to the Centennial Conference victory.
Swarthmore held an 18-14 advantage in shots, a 9-3 edge in shots on goal, and an 8-3 lead in corner kicks opportunities. Sophomore netminder
Josiah Moore suffered the loss behind seven saves, while Swarthmore's Christian Bignotti earned the victory collecting three saves.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, October 19th as they travel to Muhlenberg College for a Centennial Conference matchup starting at 2 p.m.
