COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore forward
Simon Muther netted two goals leading the Ursinus College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Moravian University on Tuesday evening from Patterson Field.
With the victory, Ursinus improves to 8-6-2 overall while the Greyhounds fell to 9-3-4 on the season. For Muther, it marks as his second career multi-goal performance and increased his season total to four goals. On the defensive end, senior netminder
Zach Matik registered his second highest save total this season with 11 and improved his season record to 7-3-2. Matik ended just two saves shy of his career-high of 13 which occurred in a 1-1 draw against Rosemont on September 11th.
Ursinus maintained possession early in the contest as the recorded the first three shots, before breaking through for the opening score at the 4:11-mark. After a throw-in from the far side of the field, the ball riotchet back to junior
AJ Torres and his long cross into the box. Torres' pass deflected off the Moravian netminder and found Muther whose shot found the back of the net for the opening score. The Greyhounds responded with a pair of shots in the ninth minute, but each were saved by Matik and the Bears defense to keep Ursinus ahead by one. Matik added two more saves later in the first half as Ursinus held a 1-0 advantage at the halftime break.
After the halftime adjustments, the Bears quickly extended their lead to two as Muther connected on his second goal the game just 25 seconds into the period. On the play, sophomore
Declan Curran played a pass to Torres along the far sideline and Torres sent an arching pass into the box finding senior
Luke Luehrs. Just in front of the Moravian goalie, Luehrs tipped the pass towards Muther leading to an open net goal for the Bears. During the 50th minute, the Bears defense and Matik continued to stand tall denying three shots on goal including a pair of corner kick opportunities from the Greyhounds. Moravian was awarded a penalty kick at the 56:10-mark, but Matik denied the Greyhounds on back-to-back attempts to keep the Bears lead at two. After the firs save, Ursinus was ruled offside allowing Moravian's Reed Sturza a second chance, but Matik's diving save kept the Greyhounds off the board. Ursinus tallied back-to-back shots on goal, before the Greyhounds added their lone goal at the 80:19-mark cutting the Bears lead to 2-1 with under 10 minutes to play. Ursinus recorded a pair of corner kicks over the remainder of the period, while Moravian was held without a shot on goal leading to a 2-1 Bears victory.
The Greyhounds held a 23-12 advantage in shots, a 12-5 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-5 lead in corner kick opportunities. Moravian's Christian Beebe suffered the loss in goal recording three saves over 90 minutes of action.
The Bears return to action on Saturday as they celebrate Senior Day by hosting Gettysburg College for a 3pm start from Patterson Field.
