Volleyball Drops Two Matches at Johns Hopkins Tri-Match

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus Volleyball team dropped a pair of straight set matches on Saturday afternoon at the Johns Hopkins tri-match. The Bears lost 3-0 to the host Blue Jays before being swept in a non-conference match by York.
 

Junior Mel Eglinton and Caroline Sherman each combined for 12 kills in the two matches while Eglinton combined nine digs as well. Senior Rachel Bernard added 20 assist behind having 13 against York and seven against Johns Hopkins.

Each team traded three-point runs to open the match before the Blue Jays won seven of the next 10 points to take a 10-6 lead. Ursinus battled back to get within two points at 13-11 until Johns Hopkins rattled off five straight points to go up 18-11. Hopkins closed out the set by taking seven of the last 10 points to win 25-14.
 
 
The teams mirrored runs in the first part of the second set until the Blue Jays broke the mold while leading 8-7 by taking nine of the next 11 points to go up 17-9. Ursinus got within six points at 18-12 before Johns Hopkins pulled away by winning seven of the next nine points for their second straight 25-14 set.
 
 
Ursinus gained an early lead in the third set at 3-1 and worked its advantage out to 5-4. The Blue Jays won four straight points to go up 8-5 and blew open the set by winning 16 of the next 19 points following a Bears point which took them to match point at 24-9. Ursinus won three straight points before the Blue Jays got their final tally.
 
 
York 3, Ursinus 0
 
The Spartans held a 5-2 lead after the Bears won the opening point and continued to fend off Ursinus on each possible run they put together. Ursinus got within one point twice and were within 13-11 before York won seven of the next nine points to go up 20-13. Down 22-15, the Bears stormed back with five straight points that made it 22-20 behind three kills from Eglinton. York moved to set point at 24-20 and Ursinus won three straight points to make it 24-23. However, the Spartans set up a kill to win the set.
 
 
York used momentum and won the first five points of the second set and eventually extended its lead to 10-3. Ursinus worked its way back to get within five points at 13-8 before the Spartans took seven of the next nine points to go up 20-10. York closed the set out by winning five of the final eight points.
 
 
The Bears won the first two points of the third set and won six of seven points after trailing 4-3 to take a 9-5 lead. Each team traded runs of three straight points that left the Bears up 12-8, but York took the lead back at 16-15 after winning eight of 11 points. Ursinus tied the set up twice at 17 and 19 but was unable to take back the lead from the Spartans. A pair of attack errors allowed Ursinus to tie the set at 22, but York ended the match by winning three of the next four points.
 
 
Ursinus returns to action on Tuesday, October 8th as they will travel to face Muhlenberg at 6:00 p.m. in Centennial Conference action.
