ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, straight set match to Muhlenberg on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action.
Junior
Mel Eglinton and
Caroline Sherman led the Bears with six kills apiece while Eglinton added 10 digs. Senior
Emma Illovsky recorded a team-high 18 digs and classmate
Rachel Bernard led the Bears with 12 assists.
Muhlenberg came out red hot to start the game as they took a 9-1 advantage in the first set. The start set the tone in the set as the Bears were unable to get within more than nine points in the opening stanza. The Mules gained another early advantage in the second set at 4-1 before the Bears worked their way back to tie the set up at five. Muhlenberg countered by winning six of the next eight points to go up 11-7, but Ursinus won four straight of their own to tie the set up at 11. The Mules took the lead back at 14-11 and the Bears pulled back within one point at 17-16. However, Muhlenberg closed the set out by winning eight of the next 10 points at 25-18.
Ursinus was the one to gain the early upper hand in the third set as they jumped out to a 7-3 advantage. The Bears continued to maintain a lead as they worked their edge out to 12-8 before extending it to 14-9. After the Mules pulled within to 17-15, the Bears responded with back-to-back points and went up 21-17 to force a Muhlenberg timeout. The Mules came alive out of the timeout and won four straight points to tie the set at 21 that forced a Bears timeout. Ursinus took the lead with a kill out of the timeout, but the Mules won four of the next five points to close the match out at 25-23.
The Bears return to action on Friday, October 11th as they will host McDaniel for senior night at 7:00 p.m.
