CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College Volleyball team earned a critical straight set (25-22, 25-19, 26-24) victory over Dickinson on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
With the win, the Bears improved to 13-10 overall and 4-5 in Centennial Conference action to stay in a position for a potential berth in the Centennial Conference Tournament. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to 13-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Senior
Caroline Sherman continued her recent tear with a team-high 16 kills on a sizzling .400 hitting percentage. Sherman now has double-digit kills in six straight matches and averaged 5.3 kills per set this week following a 21-kill performance against Haverford on Wednesday. Junior
Reena Robinson added eight kills and sophomore
Daejah Bazemore was right behind with seven kills. Junior
Mel Eglinton posted six kills and recorded a team-high nine digs while senior
Rachel Bernard paced the offense with 22 assists. Junior
Erin Dychdala tallied 16 assists as well to guide the Bears.
Ursinus started fast by winning the first four points of the opening set and extended its lead out to 10-3. Seven of the first 10 points the Bears scored came from kills and they worked their lead out to 13-6. Dickinson won three of the next five points to get within 15-10 before Ursinus countered with five of their own to go up 20-10. A kill from Sherman put the Bears up 23-14, but the Red Devils stormed back with eight straight points to get within one at 23-22. However, a ball into the net from Dickinson ended the rally and Robinson helped the Bears hold on with a kill for the final point.
The Bears once again started strong by winning the first two points of the second set and eventually made it 6-2. Dickinson made short runs at the Ursinus lead throughout the first part of the second set but each time the Bears had an answer. The Bears let its lead slip down to two points on multiple occasions but won four straight to go up 17-11 to gain some breathing room. However, Dickinson made a surge after Ursinus went up 19-13 with four straight points which forced a Bears timeout. Out of the timeout, the teams traded a pair of points before Ursinus finally broke away by winning four straight to close out the set.
Dickinson opened the third set by gaining its first lead of the match and held a 3-1 edge after a kill. The Red Devils stayed in front until three straight from the Bears after being down 6-4 put them in front at 7-6. Dickinson countered by winning five of the next six to go up 11-8 and maintained a multi-point lead out to 13-10. Each team traded runs of three straight which left Dickinson up 16-13, but the Bears made their first big run by taking six of the next seven points to go up 19-17 and force a Red Devils timeout. Ursinus forced a second Dickinson timeout after going up 22-19 before the Red Devils ran off three straight points to tie the set at 22. Junior
Lexi Couch put Ursinus in front at 23-22 to only be answered by a Dickinson kill. A serve into the net left the Bears at match point, but Dickinson stayed alive again with another kill to force extra points. Sherman delivered a kill to put Ursinus back in front and an attack error from Dickinson ended the match.
The Bears hit over .260 as a team in all three sets with the final attack percentage rounding out to .282. Dickinson's Amelia Kim led all players on the court with 18 kills.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, November 6th as they will wrap up its regular season contests at home against Bryn Mawr for a 7:30 p.m. start.
