Women's Basketball Surges in Second Half to Down Misericordia, 80-59

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Ursinus College Women's Basketball team bounced back with a resounding 80-59 win over Misericordia in the consolation game of Vassar's Hochberg Family Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
 
 
Senior Chinwe Irondi and junior Madison Smith combined for 43 of the Bears points in the win. Irondi led the way with 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting and completed a double-double with 12 rebounds. Smith also posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds Sophomore Colleen Blackman registered a career-high 17 points behind making five three-pointers and junior Ava Possenti compiled eight points and six steals. Junior Makenna Foder paced the offense with a career-high nine assists.
 
 
Blackman and Possenti opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers to put Ursinus up 6-0 early before the Cougars ran off six straight points tie the game at six at the 6:10-mark of the first quarter. Misericordia took its first lead of the game at 11-8 following five straight points and took a 14-10 edge with 1:17 left in the quarter. Blackman closed out the first quarter with five points and gave Ursinus a 15-14 lead after one. Ursinus did not relinquish its lead in the second quarter and went up by as many as six points on multiple occasions. Misericordia made a three-pointer to cut the Bears lead down to 29-26 with 2:04 left in the first half, but Ursinus closed the half out with the final four points to go up 33-26 at the half.
 
 
Misericordia scored the first two points of the second half before the Bears took control of the game with a 21-4 run over the span of nearly six minutes to take a commanding 54-32 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter. Ursinus did not let their lead fall below 17 points the rest of the way as they continued to stay hot from the field by shooting at least 57 percent in each of the last two quarters. The Bears shot a sizzling 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the field in the final quarter and led by as many as 25 points when they took a 77-52 lead at the 3:09-mark of the fourth.
 
 
The Bears shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from three-point range. Ursinus went 65 percent (13-of-20) from the free throw line and held a 43-31 rebounding advantage. Meanwhile, the Cougars shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field and 38.3 percent (5-of-13) from beyond the arc. Misericordia went 12-of-18 (66.7%) from the free throw line and were led by Jocelyn Grosch who scored a team-high 15 points with nine rebounds.
 
 
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, November 13th as they will host Alvernia for its home opener at 6:00 p.m.
