Men's Wrestling Earns Road Victory over Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Behind victories in six of the 10 bouts, the Ursinus College men's wrestling team recorded a 23-13 victory over Muhlenberg College on Thursday evening from Memorial Hall.

With the victory, Ursinus improved to an 8-2 dual meet record and a perfect 3-0 mark in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Mules fall to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

"Really good win tonight," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "We always love wrestling Muhlenberg, especially on the road. They always bring it, and the crowd had a ton of energy. It is good for us to compete in a hostile environment and stay within ourselves. We'll enjoy this tonight but have more word to do on Saturday."

First-year Sean Cowan got the Bears on the board in the opening match with a 9-1 major decision over Muhlenberg's Tyson Derenberger at 174lbs. In the first period, Cowan collected the opening takedown before tallying a reversal in the third to extend his lead to 5-0. He added a single-leg takedown in the final stanza en route to the major decision. At 184lbs, Muhlenberg answered with an 8-5 sudden victory to get the board, but the Bears responded with an 8-4 decision from sophomore Nils Updale at 197lbs over Muhlenberg's Paul Praise (Ranked sixth in the Mideast Region). Senior Jake Ahmad followed up at 285lbs with a 2-1 sudden victory to extend the Bears' lead to 10-3 through four matches.

Junior Franco Mazza battled during the 125lb bout and trailed just 1-0 in the third period, but eventually fell to Muhlenberg's Joey Lamparelli (Ranked 15th in the nation) via a 4-1 decision. The Mules regained a 13-10 match lead after collecting a major decision at 133lbs and a 4-2 decision at 141lbs. With three matches remaining, senior Dante Monaco turned the momentum back to the Bears side with a 15-3 major decision over Muhlenberg's Alex Greco at 149lbs. Monaco trailed 3-0 in the first period, but a seven-point throw gave him an 8-3 advantage at the end of the first stanza. He later added a third-period takedown a two-point near fall en route to the 15-3 victory.

With a 14-13 lead, senior Nick Lattanze went to work at 157lbs recording a 15-0 first period technical fall to increase the Bears lead to 19-13. Lattanze opened with a takedown at the 2:27-mark before adding three separate four-point near falls for the technical fall at the 1:55-mark of the match. Senior Shawn Marchesano would clinch the dual at 165lbs with a 15-3 major decision over Muhlenberg's Nick Stump in the final bout. Marchesano quieted the crowd early in the opening stanza while reversing a throw-attempt and using a headlock for an early 6-0 lead. In the second period after a quick escape from Marchesano, he added a takedown and led 10-1 heading into the final period. With under 30 seconds remaining, he added his final takedown to earn the 15-3 victory and give Ursinus the 23-13 dual-meet win.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, February 3rd as they host a Centennial Conference quad meet and will square off against Gettysburg and McDaniel College
