GLENSIDE, Pa. – Behind a 11-1 lead in the first half, the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-2 victory over Arcadia University on Wednesday evening.
With the victory Ursinus improved to 2-1 on the season while the Knights fell to 1-2 overall. Four Bears scored three or more goals in the game including junior
Grace Lynch team leading six points behind four goals and two assists. Juniors
Julia McCann,
Maeve Leonzi, and senior
Mary Michaud each tallied three goals apiece, while Michaud and McCann combined to tally 10 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Junior
Sarah Child and first-year Jamie Michaud each recorded their first career goals for the Red and Old Gold by tallying two goals apiece.
The Bears capitalized off an early Knights turnover to score the opening goal at the 11:34-mark to gain a 1-0 advantage. Lynch tallied the first goal as she gathered a pass from the X position and wrapped around the crease before sending a bouncing shot past the Arcadia netminder. After a Knights goal to the tie the contest, Ursinus bounced back with back-to-back goals from McCann and Michaud to regain a 3-1 advantage. On the Bears second goal, Lynch found McCann cutting towards the crease for the goal while Michaud fired a left-handed shot to give Ursinus a two-goal advantage with 9:02 remaining in the first quarter. Later in the period, Leonzi collected her first goal of the game while McCann added back-to-back goals to stretch the Bears lead to 6-1. With 1:05 remaining in the opening quarter, Michaud collected her second goal of the period with a bouncing shot between the goalie's legs to give Ursinus a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bears carried the momentum in the second stanza as Michaud collected her hattrick with a goal at the 13:13-mark via a left-hander in front of the crease. Each defense stepped up over the next seven minutes of play as both teams were held scoreless with Ursinus holding onto a 9-1 lead. The Bears defense forced seven Knights turnovers, while Arcadia's goaltender was credited with three saves over that time of play. With six minutes remaining, first-year
Dana DeSiato caused a turnover before scooping up the ground ball and finding sophomore
Ashley Noto for her first goal of the game. Leonzi and Lynch each added goals over the remainder of the first half as Ursinus controlled an 11-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
After the halftime adjustments, each team was held off the scoreboard for nearly the first 10 minutes before a goal from Jamie Michaud increased the Bears lead to 11 with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore Skylar Bogdan collected an assist on the play as she found Michaud cutting towards the next for her first goal of the contest. Arcadia added a late goal at the end of the period to make the score 12-2 heading into the final period. Leonzi opened the final stanza with a goal before Lynch added back-to-back goals to extend the Bears lead to 15-2 with 7:38 remaining in the contest. Child and Jamie Michaud combined to score the final three goals of the game giving Ursinus the 18-2 victory. On Child's first goal the Bears capitalized off miscommunication from the Knight's allowing the junior a free run at the net for the goal.
Ursinus held a 39-5 edge in shots on goal, a 33-16 advantage in ground balls, and a 14-9 margin in draw controls. Sophomore
Camille Hubbs collected the victory in net by earning three saves over 54:25 of action, while Arcadia's Emily Griffith suffered the loss making 21 saves in the full 60 minutes of play.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 5th as they travel to Colorado Spring, Colorado for their spring break trip and will take on Colorado College (6 p.m. MST) and Carthage College (March 7
th).
