Softball Drops Two to Alvernia

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team was swept by Alvernia in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at the Snell Softball Field.

GAME 1: Alvernia 3, Ursinus 2

After a scoreless two and a half innings to start the game, the Bears struck first when senior Maddie Solow ripped a two-out double to left field that scored junior Samanatha Mallen after she drew a walk. However, the Golden Wolves responded with a pair in the top of the fourth to go up 2-1. Alvernia extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth, but a pair of outfield assists helped the Bears keep the deficit at two runs. Solow doubled to open the bottom of the sixth and eventually came around to score off a sac fly from sophomore Kayla Carr two batters later. Ursinus put speed on at first and second base following two-out singles from senior Sarah DiLello and Mallen before a pop up to shortstop ended the game.

GAME 2: Alvernia 6, Ursinus 4

The Golden Wolves scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to gain the early advantage. Ursinus got a run back in the bottom of the first on a groundout from junior Stephanie Wichman after an error kept the inning alive. Alvernia got a run back off a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 in the top of the second before the Bears countered with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at three. Junior Rachel Hartman led the inning off with a single and eventually got to third off a sacrifice bunt and single from DiLello. Hartman scored on a Mallen groundout while DiLello tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch. Ursinus loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third and Hartman put the Bears in front at 4-3 with a seeing-eye single through the left side. However, Ursinus did not convert further with the bases loaded and one out. Alvernia answered with two runs in the top of the fourth and one in the sixth to win the game.

Solow led the Bears by going a combined 5-of-8 from the plate with an RBI while Hartman went 2-of-3 with an RBI in game two.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 16th as they will host #16 Moravian for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
