Baseball Drops Contest at Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team dropped a 10-0 road contest to Immaculata University on Friday afternoon.

Ursinus was held to just four hits as a team, while the Mighty Macs used a four-run sixth inning en route to the non-conference victory. At the plate, junior Jakob Cantor paced the Bears lineup reaching base in three of his four plate appearances behind a pair of base hits. Meanwhile, first-year Barritt Ross and sophomore Kyle Rosenfeld each added base knocks for the Bears.

After the Bears went down in order to open the contest, Immaculata scored the first run of the game behind a two-out single to take a 1-0 advantage. The Mighty Macs totaled three singles in the inning, but two runners were stranded on base a strikeout ended the frame.

The Bears lineup were kept off-balance over the next three innings as the first ten batters were retired in a row until a one-out walk in the fourth inning. Cantor reached via the walk and later stole second base, but would be stranded in scoring position as a strikeout and groundout ended the threat. Immaculata capitalized in the bottom half of the fourth inning scoring three runs off just one hit to extend their lead to 4-0. The Mighty Macs loaded the bases off two free passes and a hit-by-pitch before scoring their runs off a passed ball, a wild pitch, and a single. With runners on second and third, the Bears escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and a fly out.

The Bears recorded their first hit of the contest in the fifth frame as Rosenfeld collected a single into left field, but he was stranded at first after a strikeout ended the frame. Immaculata added four runs in the sixth inning behind five hits to increase their lead to 8-0. The Mighty Macs opened with two doubles before a two-run homerun scored the third run of the frame. With runners on first and second, their fourth extra base hit of the inning brought home their eighth run of the contest before a fly out ended the inning.

Ross added a single in the seventh inning for the Bears, but a strikeout and groundout ended the Bears chance to score. Immaculauta added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the frame and earned the 10-0 victory.

On the mound, sophomore Dan Bass suffered (0-3) the loss after pitching four innings and allowing six hits and one earned run. First-year Nicholas Cerasaro shined during his second appearance of the season pitching 1.1 innings and only allowed one batter to reach base. For the Mighty Macs, Joey Sacco finished with a game-high four base hits while Josh Crowding added three hits and three RBIs.

The Bears will return to action tomorrow as they host No. 4 Salisbury University for a doubleheader starting at noon from Thomas Field.
