CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College softball team dropped a pair of games to Washington College on Saturday afternoon in their Centennial Conference opening series.
Game 1: Washington College 3, Ursinus 1
The game went scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning before a walk and an ensuing two-run home run put the Shorewomen up 2-0. Washington College scratched across another run from a two-out single that scored a runner from second base. Ursinus got three straight singles to open the sixth inning that scored a run and left runners on second and third base with no outs. Junior
Samantha Mallen and senior
Sara Sullivan hit the first two singles before sophomore
Kayla Carr's single brought home Mallen. Unfortunately for the Bears, the runners were stranded with no more runs coming across. Ursinus got a two-out single from senior
Sarah DiLello in the top of the seventh, but a groundout in the next at-bat ended the game.
Game 2: Washington College 6, Ursinus 3
Mallen led the first inning off with a double and Sullivan followed with a bloop single to have runners on first and second base. However, the Shorewomen retired the next three batters to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the fourth the Shorewomen broke the scoreless tie with a two-out solo home run to straightaway centerfield. Ursinus responded by taking the lead at 2-1 following a dropped would be third out in center that scored runners from first and second base. Washington College countered with five runs off five hits to take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Bears got a run in the sixth from a two-out single by senior
Madison Wilson before the final out was recorded in the next at-bat.
