Softball Uses Game Two Rout to Split With McDaniel

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Softball team broke out the bats in game two to salvage a split with McDaniel in a home Centennial Conference doubleheader on a windy Saturday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field.

The Bears record now stands at 9-15 overall and 1-3 in Centennial Conference action and the Green Terror record moves to 10-12 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Ursinus got off to a hot start in game one as they scored three runs off four hits all with two outs. Junior Samantha Mallen led the game off with a walk and advanced to third from a stolen base and fielding error. Sophomore Kayla Carr dropped a single to center to score Mallen which started a string of four straight singles. Junior Stephanie Wichman snuck a single through the left side to score Carr and junior Rachel Hartman came around on a passed ball. However, the Green Terror responded with a decisive five runs in the top of the second to go up 5-3. Ursinus loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth before a strikeout ended the threat. Sophomore pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz guided the Bears through the next five innings to keep them in the game, but eight of the last nine Bears were retired to close the game.

The Bears once again struck first in game two with two runs this time in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back doubles from Carr and Hartman with two outs put Ursinus in front first for the second straight game. Ursinus extended its advantage with five runs in the bottom of the second to go up 7-0. Singles from senior Madison Wilson and Mallen put runners on first and second set up senior Maddie Solow to bring in both with a single following a throw that missed the cut off. Senior Sara Sullivan kept the inning going with a single to score Solow and Andrusiewicz dropped a double into the right field corner to bring the next two runs in. McDaniel got a run in the top of the fourth before the Bears exploded the game wide open with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth off six hits and one error to put the game away. The first six Bears reached in the inning and Carr, Hartman, and Wilson all hit RBI doubles. Carr ended up capping the inning with a two-run single for a three-RBI 5th inning. First-year Miranda McIlvaine allowed one unearned run on seven hits with a strikeout in five innings to earn the win.

Carr finished the doubleheader with 5-of-6 with four RBI's and four runs scored while Hartman went 2-of-3 with two RBI's and a run scored in game two. Sullivan went 3-of-4 with three runs scored and one RBI in game two while Wilson posted two hits and two runs scored along with a RBI.

Ursinus returns to action on Tuesday, April 9th as they will travel to face Muhlenberg for a Centennial Conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
