Softball Sweeps Muhlenberg on the Road

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus Softball team earned a huge road doubleheader sweep against Muhlenberg on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

With the sweep, the Bears improved to 11-15 overall and leveled their Centennial record to 3-3. Meanwhile, the Mules fell to 16-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

After three scoreless innings to start game one, the Bears struck for four of their five runs in the top of the fourth behind three hits. Senior Sara Sullivan beat out an infield single to start and came all the way around to score following a double to right center from sophomore Kayla Carr. Sophomore starting pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz helped herself out with a single to score Carr two batters later that made it 2-0. Following a pair of walks to load the bases, a wild pitch scored Andrusiewicz before senior Sarah DiLello brought in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly. Senior Maddie Solow doubled to lead off the top of the fifth and scored one batter later when Sullivan snuck a single through the ride side to make it 5-0. Andrusiewicz yielded a run in the bottom of the sixth but worked through a pair of errors in the field to keep the score at 5-1. She capped the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to lock up the first win of the day for Ursinus. Andrusiewicz allowed one earned run on five hits with one strikeout plus a walk.

In game two, the Bears got a run in the top of the first of game one after Carr grounded out to score Solow on third base. Solow had advanced following a single and errant throw to second base on a ground ball. Muhlenberg put runners on second and third base with one out in the bottom of the fourth before a double play that was started by junior shortstop Samantha Mallen tagging the runner moving from second and firing to first. The Mules tied the game at one after Sophia Cicchetti boldly stole home in the bottom of the fifth. Ursinus answered in the top of the sixth after Carr hit her third double in the doubleheader following a leadoff walk from Sullivan to make it 2-1, but the Mules responded in the bottom half with a two-out two-run single to take their first lead of the day at 3-2. However, the resilient Bears rallied for five runs behind three hits in the top of the seventh to decisively take a 7-3 lead. The first three Bears reached, and Solow lifted a sacrifice fly to that tied the game at three. Following a fielder's choice that put runners at first and third, Carr ripped her fourth double of the twin bill that put Ursinus ahead for good at 5-3. Junior Rachel Hartman hit a triple in the next at-bat that made it 6-3 before Andrusiewicz capped the inning with a single to bring the score to 7-3. Sophomore Riley Coneeny breezed through the bottom of the seventh to close out the doubleheader sweep.

Carr went 4-for-8 combined in the doubleheader with all four hits being doubles while driving in five runs and scoring two. Sullivan went 3 for 4 in game one and drove in one run while scoring three and Hartman went 2 for 4 with one RBI in game two. First-year pitcher Miranda McIlvaine earned the win in game two after allowing three earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.

The Bears return to action on Thursday, April 11th as they will host Franklin & Marshall for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
