Pitching Leads Baseball to Split with Kenyon College

FORT PIERCE, FL. – A pair of junior pitchers combined to give up just two runs as the Ursinus College baseball team split with Kenyon College (4-1) on Monday afternoon during the Bears spring break training trip.

The Bears were upended 2-1 during game one before bouncing back in the nightcap with a 1-0 shutout victory for the series split against the Owls. Junior Mike Scheller got the start on the mound during game one and after allowing runs in the first two innings, he responded with four straight shutout frames but suffered the loss. Meanwhile, junior David Morgan started game two and pitched seven shutout innings allowing just two hits, one walk, and fanning five Owls enroute to his first victory of the season.

Game One: Ursinus 1, Kenyon 2

During the Bears first at-bat first-year Barritt Ross led off with a single but after being picked off, Ursinus was retired in order to open the contest. Kenyon opened with a single in the bottom half of the frame as their leadoff man later advanced to third behind a stolen base and a ground out. The Owls struck first as their second hit of the day scored the opening run and gave them an early 1-0 lead.

Scheller allowed another run in the second inning but started to settle in as a strikeout with two runners on base ended the frame and kept the Bears deficit at 2-0. In the top of the third, Ross recorded his second hit of the day with a single down the left field line but was thrown out trying to advance into scoring position. During the bottom half of the frame, Scheller retired the side in order behind tallying a groundout, fly out, and fourth strikeout of the game.

Junior Jordan Williams led off the fourth with a base hit down the left field line and later advanced into scoring position after stealing second. Williams advanced to third with two outs, but was stranded on base a flyout ended the frame. Meanwhile on the mound, Scheller continued to keep the Owls lineup off balance retiring the side 1-2-3 for the second straight inning.

Each team's starter continued to keep the opposing offenses off balance as we entered the final inning with Kenyon still leading 2-0. After a flyout for the Bears to open the seventh, senior Dylan Crammer worked an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate. First-year Brandon Sullivan pinch ran for Crammer at first and would advance to third behind a single by sophomore Shane Beaver. After a fielder's choice, Ursinus scored on their first run on an RBI infield single by senior Will Kelley. With runners on first and second, sophomore Kyle Rosenfeld worked a 10 pitch at-bat to earn a free pass and load the bases for the Bears. The Ursinus came up short as a fielder's choice ended the rally and the game resulting in a 2-1 loss. Six Bears earned base hits in the contest with Ross pacing the lineup with two knocks at the leadoff position.

Game Two: Ursinus 1, Kenyon 0

The second contest featured a pitching duel between both sides as each starter only allowed two hits apiece throughout their combined 11.2 innings on the mound. For Ursinus, Morgan set career highs in innings pitched (7.0) and strikeouts (5) while earning his first collegiate victory on the day. He finishes his shutout performance allowing just two hits and one walk.

Kenyon College got the first chance at the plate and had two reach base via a walk and a single, but they were stranded on base as Morgan worked back-to-back flyouts to escape the threat. After Ursinus went down in order, Morgan returned to the mound and made quick of the Owls retiring the side in order.

In the top of the third frame, Morgan continued his outing, retiring his eighth batter in a row behind a 1-2-3 frame for the second consecutive inning. The Bears' lineup rewarded the left-hander with a run in the bottom half of the third to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Sullivan led off the frame reaching base on a throwing error from the Owls pitcher. After advancing to third on back-to-back wild pitches, Sullivan scored on a successful sacrifice bunt from sophomore George Nestor to give Ursinus a one-run advantage. Morgan continued to roll on the mound collecting a strikeout, a fly out, and an infield pop up for his third consecutive straight frame.

During the Bears' chance at the plate in the fourth, junior Andrew Richter reached via a walk and senior Dylan Crammer singled, but they would be stranded on base as a flyout, and groundout ended the inning. Morgan retired his 12th consecutive batter in the fifth until the Owls earned a single into right center for their first base runner since the first inning. The junior left-hander fanned the next batter before a groundout ended the frame with Ursinus still leading 1-0.

Morgan closed out the final two innings on the mound retiring the final six batters consecutively to earn the 1-0 victory on the mound. Four of the final six outs came via ground balls while Morgan forced an infield pop up to close out the contest. Crammer and junior Cory Burns were the lone Bears to record hits in the contest, while Nestor collected his second RBI of the season.

The Bears return to action tomorrow morning as they square off against Penn State Behrend for a single game starting at 11 a.m.
