FORT PIERCE, FL. – The Ursinus College baseball team continued their spring training trip with a split against Delaware Valley University and Penn State Behrend on Tuesday afternoon.
Against the Aggies, Ursinus resumed a game from Monday and earned a 10-9 victory while falling to Penn State Behrend 19-1 in the afternoon slate.
Game One: Ursinus 10, Delaware Valley 9
The Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Sunday before the game was delayed in the fourth inning due to rain. Junior left-hander
Kieran Hollander was the starter on Sunday and turned in a stealer performance, pitching 3.1 innings allowing just one hit and striking out three batters. Hollander set down the first nine batters in the lineup, before the Aggies collected their first hit of the game in the fourth frame.
Meanwhile for the Bears offense, they capitalized off four Aggie errors before a two-run double from junior
Andrew Richter extended the Bears lead to seven. In the fifth inning, sophomore
Tyler Dinan extended the Bears lead to eight as a run was forced home on a hit-by-pitch. Next, junior
Jude Gilhool received an RBI after a groundout scored junior
Cory Burns from third.
Delaware Valley scored an unearned run in the fifth inning and brought two more runs across the board in the sixth to make the score 9-3, Ursinus heading into the final inning. After two quick outs in the seventh, Gilhool collected the Bears' first homerun of the season with a solo shot to right field to give Ursinus a 10-3 advantage.
The Aggies opened with a single and a walk in the seventh before back-to-back strikeouts brought Delaware Valley down to their final out. They would not be turned away as four straight batters reached base and six runs came across the plate to make the score 10-9. Senior
Ian Conroy took the mound for the Bears and fanned the first batter he faced to earn his first career save in his season debut and strained the tying run at first base. First-year
Ben Couture received his first career victory after pitching 2.2 innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out one batter in his season debut.
Game Two Penn St. Behrend 19, Ursinus 1
The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early 8-0 advantage and never looked back enroute to the 19-1 decision. Penn State Behrend capitalized off 13 free passes from the Bears' pitching staff, while their starter Andrew Bredel collected the victory on the mound behind six innings pitched allowing just four hits and one earned run.
The Bears faced a 9-0 deficit entering the third inning before junior
Peter Balos lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring classmate
Dylan Runsdorf from third. Sophomore
Shane Beaver reached base during the follow at-bat, but the rally ended as a fielders' choice ended the frame. Behrend scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning before adding four more in the eighth enroute to the 19-1 decision.
At the plate, senior
Dylan Crammer paced the Bears offense with two hits while first-year
Brandon Sullivan added a base knock for Ursinus. On the mound, classmate
