Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Carthage, 20-6; Leonzi Nets 100-Career Point

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. – Junior Maeve Leonzi eclipsed the 100-career point plateaus leading the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team to a 20-6 victory over Carthage College on Thursday afternoon from Washburn Field.

Leonzi led the Bears offense with a game-high four goals, tied her season best five points, and currently sits at 103 points for her career. The Allentown, Pennsylvania native has totaled two or more goals in each of the Bears five games this season. Sophomore Ashley Noto also record five points behind two goals and three assists, while junior Grace Lynch, sophomore Meghan Vizian, and junior Julia McCann each collected three goals apiece.

The Bears scored the first three goals of the contest as Vizian recorded her first goal of the season in between Leonzi's first two goals of the contest to give Ursinus an early 3-0 lead at the 10:42-mark. On Vizian's first goal, she started the attack on forcing a turnover before capitalizing on a free position opportunity. After winning the ensuing draw control, Noto dished an assist to Leonzi who capitalized on a one-on-one opportunity to record her 100-career point. The Firebirds quickly responded with a 3-0 run to tie the game at three apiece, with 4:10 remaining in the opening period. Ursinus closed out the opening period with the final tally as Lynch scored her first goal of the game to give the Bears a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first period.

Each defense held the opposing offenses scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of the second period until Vizian found the back of net at the 10:22-mark. During the free position shot, Vizian sprinted towards the Firebirds netminder before sending a right-handed shot towards the bottom right corner of the net. Just under a minute later, first-year Dana DeSiato found classmate Jamie Michaud cutting towards the net for a goal and stretching the Bears lead to 6-3. The Bears continued to convert on their scoring opportunities adding four straight goals to close out the period and extend their lead to 10-3 at halftime.  Lynch, Leonzi, Noto combined for the final scores to give the Bears a seven-point halftime lead.

Ursinus carried the momentum into the second half as they added back-to-back goals to increase their lead to 12-3. Noto connected on the opening goal before McCann added her first score of the game at the 13:54-mark of the period. Shortly after, McCann tallied her second score to extend the Bears advantage to 13-3, but the game was halted due to lightning in the area. On McCann's second goal, she split two defenders before finding the back of the net to increase the Beas lead to double-digits with 10:58 remaining in the period. After the lightning delay, sophomore Skylar Bogdan and McCann scored back-to-back goals to increase the Bears advantage to 15-3. The Bears continued to play well to close out the period and held a 16-5 lead heading into the final stanza. The fourth quarter was highlighted by a first career goal from first-year Brooklyn Roe and a first goal of the season by Mia Gifford as Ursinus cruised to a 20-6 victory.

Sophomore Camille Hubbs earned the victory in goal behind just one save, while Carthage's Alessand Almendarez suffered the loss after tallying 15 saves over 60 minutes of play. The Bears held a 35-8 advantage for shots on goal, a 23-16 edge in ground balls, and an 18-12 lead in draw controls. Ursinus finished with a perfect clear percentage (12-of-12), while the Firebirds converted 63.6% (7-of-11) of their clear attempts. Carthage's August Claridge finished with a team-high three goals.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday, March 16th as they host Cabrini University for a noon start from Patterson Field.
