Softball Bests Marian in First of Three; Mallen Records 100th Career Hit

CLERMONT Fla. – The Ursinus softball team finished its Florida trip with a tripleheader on Friday afternoon. The Bears dropped two out of three games on the day, defeating Marian 7-1 before suffering losses of 8-0 to No. 7 Rowan and 4-1 to Plymouth State.

Junior Samantha Mallen eclipsed the 100-career hit plateau in her first at-bat in the Plymouth State game and finished with four hits on the day.

Ursinus 7, Marian 1

The Bears jumped on the Sabres right from the start as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning off four hits and one error. Mallen put herself into scoring position by reaching on an error at third base and stealing a base. Sophomore Kayla Carr knocked her in with a single for the games first run. Sophomore Stephanie Wichman followed with a blazing double to left center to score Carr and senior Madison Wilson capped the inning with a single in the next at-bat that brought in Wichman. Ursinus added two more runs in the top of the second inning that made it 5-0 off three hits. Mallen singled and senior Maddie Solow immediately brought her home with a double. Solow came around to score one batter later off a fielding error from the second baseman. Marian got their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third off two out double following a hit by pitch in the previous at-bat. However, got the run back in the top of the fourth when senior Sara Sullivan blooped a single in the infield to score classmate Sarah DiLello that made it 6-1. The Bears added one last run in the top of the seventh when sophomore Katie Ciuffreda singled with two outs to score pinch runner Charlotte Martocci on second. First-year pitcher Miranda McIlvaine cruised to her first complete game and collegiate win behind holding the Sabres without a hit for the final four innings. She allowed one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Junior Rachel Hartman went 3-of-4 in the game while Solow, Wichman, and Carr each tallied two hits apiece.

Rowan 8, Ursinus 0

Ursinus went toe-to-toe with the Profs, who were coming off an appearance in the 2023 Division III College World Series. Mallen and Solow led the bottom of the first off with singles before Rowan recorded three straight outs to escape the frame. Sophomore Christa Andrusiewicz set down the first eight Prof batters in order before a hit by pitch with two outs in the third inning. A questionable safe call on a stolen base attempt set Rowan up with a runner in scoring position before a double brought in the first Rowan run that made it 1-0. The game stayed 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Rowan scored four runs behind a three-run home run to make it 5-0. Rowan added three more runs in the top of the seventh.

Plymouth State 4 , Ursinus 1

The Panthers used a three run first inning behind three hits to take an early lead in the contest and added a fourth run on a squeeze bunt in the top of the fifth. Ursinus got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after Solow singled in DiLello from second, who led the inning off with a bunt single. The Bears had first and third with one out until Solow was tagged out during a double steal attempt. Ursinus loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but a sharp liner by Mallen was snatched by the Panthers first baseman. Ursinus had one hit in the seventh but was unable to advance the runner past first.

The Bears return to action on Thursday, March 14th as they will host Alvernia for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
