COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A seven-run ninth inning proved to be the difference as the Ursinus College baseball team was upended by DeSales University on Monday afternoon from Thomas Field.
The Bears overcame an early deficit before tying the game at nine apiece in the eighth inning, but the Bulldogs late rally gave them a 16-12 non-conference victory. With the victory, DeSales improved to 15-15 overall, while Ursinus fell to 11-18 on the season.
At the plate, a trio of underclassmen recorded three-hit performances as first-year
Brandon Sullivan, sophomore
Kyle Rosenfeld, and first-year
Gabriel Alexander paced the Bears lineup. Meanwhile, junior
Andrew Richter blasted a homerun, finished 2-for-4 at the plate, and tied a season-high with four RBIs. Classmates
Jakob Cantor and
Jude Gilhool each recorded a base hit and three RBIs.
First-year
Wesley George recorded his first career start on the day and allowed one hit over an inning of work, while striking out three batters. In the top of the first inning, George struck out the first two batters before the Bulldogs used a two-out rally to plate the opening run. After a walk and a wild pitch, DeSales' cleanup man Owen Fischl collected a double into left centerfield to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.
The Bears nearly answered during their first chance at the plate as a double from Sullivan put a runner in scoring position with just one out. Next, Cantor reached on a free pass before a flyout and stolen base but two runners in scoring position. Unfortunately, the Ursinus rally was cut short as an infield groundout closed out the first inning. DeSales extended their lead to 5-0 in the second frame as they capitalized off two Bears' defensive errors and recorded three hits to score four runs.
DeSales added a run in the third inning to stretch their lead to 6-0, while Ursinus put runners on base during the next three frames, but double plays ended the Bears' rallies in the second and fourth innings. After a run in the fifth inning by DeSales, the Bears bounced back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut their deficit to 7-2. Junior
Cory Burns led off reaching on a hit-by-pitch, while Richter collected a base hit into right field to advance Burns to third base. Next, Sullivan followed up with a bunt single and an RBI, while a groundout by Gilhool scored the Bears second run of the frame.
Senior
Matt Tuley relieved sophomore
Max Shilstone in the fourth inning and cruised through the top of the sixth as he induced a strikeout and a 6-3 double play. The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend their advantage to 9-2 behind three hits and two free passes. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, DeSales recorded a single and double to plate their two runs. With the bases loaded, Tuley escaped the jam by forcing a fly out to right field.
Ursinus started to mount their comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning as they would push three runs across the plate to make their deficit 9-5. Burns led off with a single into right center, while a walk from Richter, and a single from Sullivan loaded the bases with no outs. After a Cantor sacrifice fly into centerfield, Gilhool came through with a single into right field to score two runners. The Bears rally ended as a lineout to left field stranded two runners on base.
Ursinus added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at nine apiece behind just two hits and two walks. Alexander led with a double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. After Burns was hit-by-a-pitch, Richter connected on a pitch drilling a three-run homerun to right centerfield to cut the Bears deficit to one. It is Richter second consecutive game with a homerun, and he currently leads the team with three long balls this season. Sullivan added the final run of the inning as he would cross the plate on a wild pitch.
DeSales bounced back in the top of the ninth as the Bulldogs scored seven runs off six hits, one walk, and no errors. Seven straight batters reached base for the Bulldogs, and they held a 16-9 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. Ursinus countered with three runs during their last chance at the plate eventually falling by a 16-12 score. Richter added a sacrifice fly while Cantor added a two RBI single in the inning.
For the Bulldogs, JT Anderosky finished with a game-high four hits behind a 4-for-6 day, while Fischl and Zachary Zuchowski each added two hits and two RBIs.
The Bears return to action tomorrow as they host Swarthmore College from Thomas Field with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
