COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team nearly brought the tying run to the plate, but fell to Swarthmore College, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon from Thomas Field.
At the plate, juniors
Andrew Richter,
Jakob Cantor, and first-year
Brandon Sullivan paced the Bears lineup by each recording two hits apiece. Today's performance from Richter marked his fifth consecutive game with a multi-hit game, while he extended his hitting streak to eight games.
Swarthmore recorded two base hits in the top of the first inning, but first-year
Barritt Ross escaped the jam by recording a groundout and popup to end the opening frame. In the Bears first chance at the plate, Sullivan tallied a line drive into right centerfield for a double but would be stranded on third base as a groundout and flyout closed the frame.
The Garnet added the opening run in the second inning as a leadoff double and two groundouts pushed across the first run of the game. In the bottom half of the inning, senior
Will Kelley recorded a one-out single into left field and later advanced to third on two wild pitches. Unfortunately, the Bears stranded the tying run in scoring position as a groundout ended the threat.
Ross started to settle in on the mound in the third inning as he faced the minimum behind a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. He carried the momentum into his fourth inning of work as he retired each of the three batters he faced via a lineout, foul out, and groundout. The Bears loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but would strand them loaded as a flyout ended the inning. Cantor collected an infield single, while junior
Jordan Williams walked, and Kelley was hit-by-a-pitch.
Ross continued his stellar outing in the fifth inning as he fanned the first two batters of the frame before recording an infield pop up to bring Ursinus back up to the plate. The Bears bounced back by gaining their first lead of the game, behind scoring three runs off two hits. Junior
Cory Burns led off by reaching on an infield error and advanced into scoring position on a groundout. After a bunt single by Sullivan, Cantor was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases with just one out. Next, junior
Peter Balos recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game at one apiece. With two outs, junior
Jude Gilhool sent a bouncing ball up the middle that deflected off the Garnet's second basemen's glove to allow two runs to score and give Ursinus a 3-1 advantage.
Swarthmore responded with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to regain a 5-3 advantage as they capitalized off five base hits. The Garnet tallied two singles before Ross exited the contest, while a double and two-run homerun gave Swarthmore a two-run advantage. First-year
Nick Crocona escaped the inning by collecting a flyout to centerfield.
The Garnet added two more runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 7-3 as a walk and four singles brought home the insurance runs. After three consecutive singles, the Bears went to the bullpen and brought in junior
Connor Bogansky to face the bases loaded with no outs. Bogansky stranded the bases loaded as he recorded a strikeout and two flyouts to escape the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Cantor led off with a single into left field before advancing to second as Balos was hit-by-a-pitch. Cantor would swipe third during the next at-bat, while Balos advanced into scoring position on a pass ball. The Garnet collected back-to-back strikeouts, but a walk from Kelley loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, with the tying run at the plate, Swarthmore induced a groundout back to the mound to strand the bases loaded.
The Bears would face a similar situation in the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with one out. Gilhool led off with a one-out single, before sophomore
Shane Beaver drew a walk, and Kelley was hit-by-a-pitch. The Garnet went to the bullpen and their reliever rolled a 6-4-3 double play to earn an 8-3 victory.
On the mound, Ross pitched 5.1 innings allowing six hits, three earned runs, and struck out three batters. Bogansky and classmate
Mike Scheller each pitched clean sheets in relief out of the bullpen. For the Garnet, Jeremy Jensen picked up his third win of the season while Casey Jordan earned his first save of the campaign.
The Bears will look to even the season series against the Garnet as they make the trip to Swarthmore on Friday for a road contest starting at 3:30 p.m.
