Scheller and Morgan Leads Baseball Past Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Behind an all-around performance, the Ursinus College baseball team defeated Swarthmore College, 8-1 on Friday afternoon from Clothier Field.

The Bears totaled 11 hits throughout the game, while the pitching staff held the Garnet to just two hits en route to the Centennial Conference victory. Junior righty Mike Scheller improved to 2-4 this season behind pitching five innings, scattering two hits, and one unearned run. Meanwhile out of the bullpen, classmate David Morgan earned his second career save behind four innings pitched on the mound without allowing a hit. At the plate, junior Jakob Cantor went 2-for-4 collecting his 100th-career hit while scoring two runs and collecting an RBI. Classmate Jude Gilhool extended his hitting streak to five games behind a 3-for-4 day and junior Peter Balos tallied two RBIs during a 2-for-5 outing.

Cantor led off the opening frame with a two-out single and later swiped second base, but was stranded in scoring position as a strikeout ended the inning. Scheller received his sixth start of the season on the mound and turned in his best performance of the year. In the first inning, he allowed a two-out single before stranding the runner on first via a flyout to left field.

Ursinus jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the second inning as three hits and a free pass gave the Bears an early lead. After two quick outs, Gilhool reached on an infield single before advancing to second on a walk from sophomore George Nestor. Next, sophomore Kyle Rosenfeld delivered a double into right centerfield to plate Gilhool and give Ursinus a 1-0 advantage. After junior Andrew Richter reached on a hit-by-pitch, first-year Brandon Sullivan knocked a single into right field plating Nestor and Rosenfeld to stretch the Bears lead to three. Scheller continued to roll out on the mound retiring the next six batters as the team's entered the fourth frame with Ursinus leading by three.

The Garnet capitalized off a one-out error in the fourth inning to cut their deficit to two. Swarthmore had a runner get cut down at second base as Nestor recorded a 2-6 caught stealing putout. After a single and a walk, Swarthmore netted their lone run on an error before Scheller escaped the jam with a ground out and strikeout. Both pitching staffs cruised through the fifth frame as each team was retired in order and the Bears entered the sixth leading 3-1.

The Bears responded in the sixth frame by scoring four runs off four hits and two defensive miscues to extend their lead to 7-1. Gilhool led off the frame with a lead-off double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Next, Nestor tallied an RBI on a single through the left side to increase the Bears lead to 4-1. After a sacrifice bunt and foul out, Sullivan reached first on a throwing error allowing Nestor to score. Cantor followed up with his 100th-career hit and recording an RBI in the process to increase the Bears lead to five. After advancing on a wild pitch, Balos came through with a single up the middle to score Cantor and give Ursinus a 7-1 lead.

Morgan replaced Scheller on the mound to start the sixth and recorded three consecutive flyouts to keep the Bears lead at six. He continued to keep the Garnet off balance in the seventh inning as the lone baserunner reached on a walk, before a strikeout and two flyouts ending the frame.

Ursinus added an insurance run in the eighth inning, while Morgan retired each of the final six batters he faced to record the save and give the Bears an 8-1 victory.

The Bears will return to action tomorrow as they celebrate Senior Day by hosting Dickinson College for a doubleheader starting at noon from Thomas Field.
