Slow Start Dooms Men's Lacrosse at No. 6 Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Lacrosse made a late charge before ultimately being staved off by No. 6 Swarthmore 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
 
 
The Bears ultimately could not overcome a slow first quarter that saw the Garnet score the games first four goals in the opening quarter. Junior Christopher Pucciarelli got the Bears on the board with 36 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 4-1 before sophomore Harry Sweitzer made it 4-2 at the 12:54-mark of the second quarter. The Garnet scored to make it 5-2 at the 8:53-mark of the second quarter, but senior Drake Kasoff kept the Bears around with a goal that made it 5-3 35 seconds later. However, the Garnet struck right back a minute later and took a 6-3 lead into the half.
 
 
Swarthmore gained their largest lead of the game at 8-3 after netting a pair of goals in the third quarter while holding the Bears scoreless. Sweitzer notched his second of the game at the 10:52-mark of the fourth quarter that made it 8-4 before the Garnet responded just over a minute later after taking advantage of an Ursinus turnover. Senior Eddie Newman and sophomore Lars Homan tallied back-to-back goals to make it a three goal game with 3:27 left in regulation, but the Garnet had an answer once again to go up 10-6 and maintaining their lead. Sophomore Aidan Kirk tallied the Bears final goal of the game from a man-up opportunity with 1:17 left in regulation.
 
 
The Bears held a 46-40 advantage in total shots and a slight 24-22 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus held a 35-25 advantage in ground balls and a 13-8 edge in face off wins. Senior goalkeeper Jonathan Singer made 12 saves in the full 60 minutes while Garnet goalkeeper Drew Tyson recorded 17 saves in a strong performance. Six different Bears tallied a goal with Sweitzer leading the way behind four points off two goals and two assists.
 
 
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, April 20th as they will host Washington College for senior day at 3:00 p.m.
