Women's Lacrosse Hangs Tough with No. 8 Gettysburg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Lacrosse team hung tough with No. 8 Gettysburg before ultimately suffering a 19-11 setback to the Bullets on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action at Patterson Field.

The Bears record now stands at 7-7 overall and 3-4 entering the final week of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bullets maintained their first place at the top of the Centennial standings with a 13-2 record and 6-0 mark in conference play.

Ursinus started strong and took an initial 1-0 lead at the 14:01-mark after junior Grace Lynch scored a wraparound goal. Gettysburg knotted the game at one following a Bears turnover before first-year Dana DeSiato put Ursinus back in front at 2-1 just 42 seconds later a free position shot goal. Gettysburg scored back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game at 3-2 with 10:08 left in the first quarter, but junior Maeve Leonzi tied the game back up at three with a free position shot goal at the 8:18-mark. Gettysburg got one back off a free position shot goal before being answered once again by the Bears when senior Mary Michaud scored to make it 4-4. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Bullets used a 14-unaswered goal run over the span of two and a half quarters to take control of the game at 18-4.

However, the Bears refused to quit as they closed out the game by scoring seven of the last eight goals that brought it to the final score of 19-11. Sophomore Sarah Child got a goal in the last seconds of the third quarter to end the run after a quick clear. Junior Julia McCann opened the scoring in the fourth quarter just 14 seconds in that made it 18-6. Following a Bullets tally at the 9:45-mark, the Bears scored a pair within a minute of each other that made it 19-8. First-year Jaime Michaud and sophomore Ashley Noto scored the goals for the Bears and Lynch followed with her second of the game with 2:58 left in the contest. Jaime Michaud scored her second from a free position shot in the final minute and Noto added another right before the final horn. The 11 goals were the most the Bears scored against Gettysburg since the 2004 season.

The Bullets held a 36-26 advantage in shots and a 27-18 edge in shots on goal. Gettysburg held an 18-12 advantage in ground balls while the Bears owned an 18-13 advantage in draw control wins. Sophomore goalkeeper Camille Hubbs made seven saves in 45 minutes of action while senior Charlotte Grahame closed out the last 15 minutes. Gill Cortese made four saves in 30 minutes for the Bullets and Juliette Devarenne tallied four saves in the final 30 minutes. Noto, Lynch, and Jaime Michaud all scored two goals while McCann added three points behind two assists and a goal.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 24th as they will host Muhlenberg for senior night at 7:00 p.m.
