Women's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker to Muhlenberg on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – An 8-3 run in the second half proved too be the difference as the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team fell 14-13 against Muhlenberg College on Wednesday evening from Patterson Field.
 

The Bears honored six seniors prior to the contest as Bev Lewis, Mary Michaud, Gabrielle Liott, Mia Gifford, Charlotte Grahame, and Giselle Esquivel were recognized for their dedication and commitment to the Women's Lacrosse over the last four seasons.  

 
Junior Julia McCann finished with a team-high four goals recording her sixth hat trick of the season and fourth consecutive game with a goal. First-year Jamie Michaud netted three goals behind five shots and inches closer to the 20-goal threshold as she currently ranks tied for fifth on the team with 19 goals. McCann and senior Julie Cherneskie each finished with a team-high four ground balls, while Cherneskie added two caused turnovers.
 
 
The Bears struck first at the 12:43-mark as McCann scooped a deflected rebound and snuck a shot past the Mules netminder to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. After a Mules goal at the 11:39-mark, Ursinus bounced back with a goal of their own from Michaud to regain a 2-1 advantage with 9:59 remaining in the period. During the goal, junior Grace Lynch assisted Michaud after seeing her sprinting towards the front of the cage for a wide-open opportunity. After nearly seven minutes of scoreless action, Ursinus stretched their lead to three as back-to-back goals from junior Maeve Leonzi and Michaud extended the Bears advantage to 4-1.
 

Muhlenberg responded in the opening minute of the second stanza as a goal at the 14:12-mark cut the Bears lead to two. Ursinus responded with a 3-0 run powered by two goals from McCann to extend their lead to 7-2 with 9:33 remaining in the opening. Senior Mary Michaud connected on free-position opportunity during the Bears run, while first-year Dana DeSiato netted an assist on McCann's third goal of the game. The Mules bounced back with a 3-1 run to cut their deficit to 8-5 with 2:46 remaining in the first half capitalizing on a handful of fouls committed by the Bears. Each team traded a goal over the remainder of the half, before Lynch scored her first goal of the game to give Ursinus a 10-6 halftime advantage.
 

After the halftime adjustments, Ursinus recorded the opening two goals of the third quarter to extend their advantage to 12-6 with 12:30 remaining in the period. Sophomore Meghan Vizian and Leonzi each scored goals for the Bears during the run to give Ursinus a six-goal advantage. Muhlenberg responded with four straight goals to bring their deficit to two with 5:12 remaining in the quarter.
 

In a tightly contest battle, Muhlenberg held a 31-29 advantage in shots, while the Bears earned a 16-14 edge in draw controls. The Mules converted on 84.2% (16-of-19) of their clear attempts with Ursinus finishing the contest converting 76.4% (13-of-17) of their clears. In goal, sophomore Camille Hubbs suffered the loss earning nine saves, while Muhlenberg's Ellison Ervin earned the victory collecting seven saves over 55 minutes of action. Three of the four Muhlenberg goals came on women-up opportunities as the Mules capitalized off two green cards and one yellow card assessed to Ursinus. With under a minute remaining in the quarter, Lynch netted her second goal of the game to halt the Mules run and give Ursinus a 13-10 lead heading in the final period. The Mules controlled the momentum in the fourth period as they tied the game at 13 apiece behind three consecutive goals. With under three minutes remaining, the Mules gained their first lead of the contest as Nicole Steiner scored a goal during a free-position opportunity. With under 30 seconds remaining, Ursinus nearly found the equalizer, but a save by the Mules resulted in the 14-13 defeat.  
 

The Bears will return to action on Saturday, April 27th as they travel to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for their Centennial Conference regular season finale against Dickinson College at 3 p.m.
