Baseball Downed on the Road at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball fell 7-3 on Monday evening in a non-conference matchup against the University of Scranton from Volpe Field.
 

The Bears led twice throughout the contest, but the Royals' scored five runs between the third and fourth inning before five shutout frames from each pitching staff resulted in the 7-3 final score.

 
Ursinus jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior Will Kelley led off with an infield single. After a double from junior Jakob Cantor, classmate Jude Gilhool followed up with a sacrifice fly to centerfield before a wild pitch allowed Cantor to score. First-year Wesley George received his second career start out on the mound and cruised through the opening frame behind a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.

 
The Royals answered in the bottom half of the second inning as they tied the contest at two apiece. After two quick outs, Scranton drew back-to-back walks before a double to left field brought home brought home runners. George stranded a runner in scoring position as a groundout ended the inning and his outing on the mound. In the third inning, Ursinus responded with a run to regain a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Tyler Dinan led off with a walk and advanced into scoring position via a stole base. After junior Andrew Richter reached on an error, Kelley moved both runners up 90 feet via a sacrifice bunt back to the mound. Next, Cantor collected an RBI via a groundout to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage, while a flyout stranded Richter in scoring position.
 

Scranton responded during their next chance at the plate as three hits and a walk led to three runs allowing the Royals to regain a 5-3 advantage. First-year Ryan Barrow relieved George on the mound at the beginning of inning and escaped the jam via a flyout to right field. After the Bears inning ended via a 4-6-3 double play, Scranton added two more runs in the fourth frame to increase their lead to 7-3.

 
In the fifth inning, Richter led off by reaching on a hit-by-pitch while a single from Kelley put runners on the corners with two outs. Richter's hit-by-pitch extended his mark this season to 16 which currently leads the Centennial Conference. Unfortunately, with two runners on base and two outs, the Bears threat to score was turned away as a strikeout ended the inning. Over the remainder of the contest, each pitching staff continued to keep the opposing offenses off-balance as the Bears fell 7-3.

 
On the mound, sophomore John Hodges pitched three innings allowing just two earned runs on two hits. First-year Nicholas Cerasaro closed out the contest pitching the final two frames allowing just one hit and zero earned runs. At the plate, Kelley led the way finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored while Cantor and first-year Gabriel Alexander each added a knock.

 
The Bears will return to action on Tuesday, April 23rd as they travel to Allentown, Pennsylvania for a road matchup against Muhlenberg College at 3:30 p.m.
